Deuteronomy 5:11 (NKJV) 11 ‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
When most Christians hear someone use the Lord’s name in vain it will stand out. And it will usually cut them right to the heart.
But I do know some church-going folks who will do this and not even give it a second thought.
What is this? How can it be? Why don’t they feel that “cut” and ache in their heart, but instead think nothing to blurt it out without a care in the world?
One day I was at a gathering, and a story was being shared by someone. We were laughing and having a great time.
All of sudden, as they were sharing, they took the Lord’s name in vain several times in one sentence. They continued to laugh and carry on, not even paying attention to what they had just said. There was no conviction whatsoever.
It hurt me as if a knife had stabbed me.
I immediately asked God for forgiveness on their behalf. I was sorry for even being there.
As I sat there, I could no longer listen or enjoy the conversation. But I began to pray silently, out of concern for the Lord and how He must have felt. I said, “Lord, what do I do?”. He said, “take a stand”.
He shared with me that, “when someone takes My name in vain, they have rejected Me. To them, I am not Who I claim to be in their eyes, and I ache when I hear My name being used in such a way. I hear it all. Not one time does it slip past my ears”.
If we can take the Lord’s name in vain like that, thinking nothing of it, we have to question ourselves as to where we are in our walk with Him. Are we even with Him?
If this is speaking to someone, I stand up and say to you, “this is the time and the chance to take this seriously and not continue in this bad habit of using God’s name in such a wrong way any longer”.
Even if you may not mean it in a bad way, and maybe you see it as “just a phrase” that you are so used to using, know this; to Him it is hurtful and degrading. He hears it and He will not hold us guiltless.
In other words, we will be accountable for every time we use His name in vain.
I’m talking to believers today. Repent and get it right in our heart. It can’t continue. Realize what you are saying.
The only way the Lord’s name should be used is in exaltation!! Amen.
Philippians 2:9-11 (NKJV) 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
