John 8:36 (NKJV) 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
Truth is a funny thing.
It is very powerful, and it can change us immensely if we allow it to.
The problem with truth is that it can also hurt our feelings if we let it.
You see, truth almost always comes to us from others who speak it to us.
As ones who bear truth and speak it to others, it’s important that we do so in a way that’s led by the Spirit of God. We need to have compassion, mercy and grace as part of our delivery. We need to have the heart of God.
And we need not be afraid of saying something that may hurt someone’s feelings when we speak things that God is leading us to say.
On the flip side, if we are hearing truth, we need to be able to listen to it and not get our feelings hurt by what we hear.
Some of the things that we hear others say to us can cause us to want to bristle up and defend ourselves immediately. This isn’t usually a good thing.
We need to learn not to immediately go into defense mode. Instead, we need to go into “receiving mode”, allowing God to show us truth about ourselves, so He can use that truth to mold us and shape us into the man or woman He wants us to be.
This may seem like a minor thing to many people. But it is, in fact, a very major part of our growth as believers. Until we learn to accept Holy Spirit-led truth about ourselves, we will never grow to the full potential of who God wants us to be.
Proverbs 27:17 (NKJV) 17 As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
