1 John 3:22 (NKJV) 22 And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.
As we continue discussing the way Jesus referred to commandments, here’s another good scripture to break down.
Jesus talked a lot about the importance of prayer, as did Paul and other apostles in their New Testament epistles. It’s a key part of our walk with God.
In this verse, John also refers specifically to getting what we ask for in prayer.
Unanswered prayers are a major stumbling block in the lives of many believers. People often question why they pray and those prayers go unanswered.
First off, we need to be sure to understand that we will never have answers for all of our questions about what God does or does not do. Some things we just need to accept and have the faith to know that it is all OK, even if we don’t understand or agree with God’s answer (or apparent lack of an answer).
But, understanding what John was referring to in this verse can be a very big eye opener for all of us.
Look at what He says; “we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight”.
That’s a big deal! We receive our answers because we “keep His commandments” and we do the things that are pleasing in His sight.
So, our motives can’t be selfish, and our walk with Him has to be in its proper place.
This doesn’t mean that we have to be perfect. Not at all. But it does mean that we have to have our priorities in order when it comes to where our relationship with God falls in the grand scheme of things.
James indicated the very same thing in this verse:
James 4:3 (NKJV) 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.
So, let’s take what we’ve learned here and begin to apply it to our lives, especially in the area of prayer, and watch what God does with it.
