Tag: What the Bible says about growing our relationship with God

Bible Verse of The Day – 2-3-24

Jeremiah 29:13 (NKJV) 13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

With any relationship, we get out what we put in.

Our relationship with God is no different. It will grow on the same scale as the effort we put into it.

If we truly desire to know Him and serve Him wholeheartedly, we will intentionally make the time needed to grow and mature as a believer.

This isn’t something that we always think of or understand when we first become a child of God.

In fact, it is something that is not taught nearly enough.

While the forgiveness of our sins is monumental, if we do not feed our spirit with the word of God, it will be in danger of withering and dying.

Jesus taught about this when He shared the parable of the sower and the seeds.

Matthew 13:20-21 (NLT) 20 The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy. 21 But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God’s word.

This is why we need to be sure to put forth the required effort to keep ourselves fed and growing.

It is something that no one can do for us. Yes, we can have people help us, lead us and guide us, especially in the beginning of our new walk with God. But in the end, we are the ones who are responsible for whether we grow or not.

Think of it like a newborn baby. When the baby is small, it requires constant help and nurturing. But as it grows older and older it must learn to take what it has been taught and use that knowledge to grow and mature on its own.

This is why it is paramount for each of us to do whatever is necessary to feed ourselves with the word of God.

God tells us that as we make the effort to seek Him, we will find Him if we seek Him with all our heart.

The key lies in the phrase, “with all your heart”, since God spells it out for us right there.

Suffice it to say that effort on our part is required. And that effort is something that we must be willing to put forth.

It may not always be easy or comfortable, but we need to keep in mind the incredible sacrifice that Christ made for us on the cross. This will usually put things into perspective and help motivate us to do what it takes to mature and grow as a believer.

And as we do this, let us liken ourselves to a runner in a race, disciplining ourselves, shaking off all that tries to hold us back, and doing all that is necessary to claim the prize at the finish line.

For the prize we race toward is eternal.

Hebrews 12:1-2 (NKJV) 1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Amen

Bible Verse of The Day – 5-16-22

Zechariah 1:3-4 (NKJV) 3 Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Return to Me,” says the Lord of hosts, “and I will return to you,” says the Lord of hosts. 4 “Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets preached, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Turn now from your evil ways and your evil deeds.” ’ But they did not hear nor heed Me,” says the Lord.

Hearing the word of God is good. In fact, it’s a necessity if we wish to learn and grow as a believer.

Hearing the word of God also helps our faith to grow.

Romans 10:17 (NKJV) 17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

But, in addition to hearing the word of God, we need to heed the word of God.

If we hear the word of God and fail to obey it or learn from it, then hearing it is largely useless to us.

It’s critical that we hear the word of God and then follow what we hear, obeying God to the fullest.

The Old Testament is loaded with examples of God’s prophets speaking, telling the Israelites what God wanted form them.

And yet, they failed over and over again to listen and obey Him.

People of God, let’s not be like the Israelites, ignoring God to the point of wrath.

He deserves better than this.

As we follow His desires, our lives will bring glory and honor to Him.

Bible Verse of The Day – 11-15-21

John 13:9 (NKJV) 9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”

As Jesus was spending His last hours with the disciples, He shocked them by washing their feet. This is something that only servants did during that time period.

The fact that their Master would lower Himself to wash their feet was beyond their comprehension.

What’s more, though, is that Peter flat out refused to let Jesus do so. He didn’t feel worthy to have Jesus perform such a seemingly menial task on his behalf.

When Peter refused, Jesus rebuked him, telling Peter that if he wouldn’t allow Jesus to wash his feet, then he couldn’t have any part with Him.

At that, Peter proclaimed, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”.

And so it should be with you and I.

Not that Jesus is standing in front of us offering to wash our feet, but that we would allow Jesus to “wash” our whole selves, cleansing us and making us vessels that are worthy of His name, by the power of His Spirit and through our complete submission to Him.

This is the only way we will ever fully develop our relationship with Him, allowing us to grow into mature believers who serve God wholeheartedly, shining His light brightly to bring glory and honor to Him.

Jesus, wash all of me.

Bible Verse of The Day – 10-29-21

1 Corinthians 13:11 (NKJV) 11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

There is something very important implied here for all believers to pay close attention to.

That something is our growth and maturity in Christ.

When we first put our faith in Christ, we are mere children in our relationship with Him.

But as time goes by, we need to make sure that we’re doing our part to mature and grow.

Everyone grows at different rates. This is a given. The important thing is that we do grow!

Thankfully, God is patient, and He gives us grace as we learn to crawl, then move on to walking and, ultimately, running.

Some of us might get stuck at crawling. There are usually a couple of reasons for this.

1. A lack of time and effort put into it on our part.

2. A lack of understanding.

There is a solution for both of these. Let’s take a look.

For the first problem, we need to be sure we’re disciplined enough to set aside the time needed to build and grow our relationship with God. It’s critical to growth as a believer.

If we’re not doing this, many times it’s because we haven’t taken the relationship seriously enough. The cure for that is to grasp and understand what Christ did for us on the cross, literally taking our place, dying as a substitute for you and for me.

To fix the lack of understanding, there are usually two different issues we need to look at.

The first would be making sure that we’re spending the time needed in God’s word to get that understanding. And if we’re having trouble understanding what we’re reading, it’s a great idea to get some help from someone who can help us understand it better.

Lastly, if we are already learning from someone else, but we’re still having difficulty, we may need to sit under a different teacher or organization in order to get taught in a way that helps us. This can sometimes make a major difference in how well we learn!

So, remember that we need to be growing as believers. But remember, also, that we are not on our own as we do learn and grow.

Bible Verse of The Day – 5-17-21

Psalm 32:8 (NKJV) 8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.

God wants us all to learn and grow, and He is faithful to instruct us, teach us and guide us in the way we should go.

Do we sometimes wrestle with the direction our life is going?

Do we fail over and over again when it comes to making sound decisions and choices that are pleasing to God and healthy for our walk with Him?

It happens to everyone. At some point in our relationship with Christ, we reach a point where we realize that He is our all, and that we can do nothing without Him.

John 15:5 (NKJV) 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

It’s at that point when we need to reach out to Him, surrendering our own will, and finally begin letting Him have the reins when it comes to guiding our steps.

You see, He gives us the freedom to choose. He never forces Himself on us. We choose.

And this is why our relationship with Him will be so strong and beautiful when we make the choice ourselves.

It will be sincere and genuine. Because we made the choice, we will better understand its importance. And we will be more willing to put forth the effort it requires in order to grow and become stronger.

And what a difference that will make in our lives!

Let Him instruct, teach and guide us. And let’s show our gratitude by walking out those very steps that He leads us to take.

Bible Verse of The Day – 4-30-21

John 15:5 (NKJV) 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

Over the years, as I have grown and matured as a believer, the truth and reality of what Jesus said has become more and more real and more apparent to me. Without Him I can do nothing.

In fact, without Him, not only can I do nothing, but I am nothing.

I have seen that God is my source. He is my everything. He is the very reason I exist.

As the last 40+ years have gone by, since I became a believer, God has shown me in great depth how we need Him.

It is when we get this revelation and we truly begin to understand it, that we begin to see Who He is and why we are in such desperate need of Him in our lives.

You might ask, “how do I get that revelation myself?’.

There is no magic formula. But I will say this; it comes as we begin to understand our own weakness and the depravity of humanity in general.

It is then that our spirit cries out and asks God to commune with us and truly make us His own, cleansing us from the inside, out, as He purifies us as one refined in the fire.

I know that may sound a bit over the top to some. It might even sound religious. But trust me when I tell you, I am one of the least religious people you will ever meet.

I just know that God is sovereign and I need Him. Period.

It is that simple understanding that has helped me grow my relationship with Him to where it is now.

And here’s the cool part; I’m not special. You can do the very same thing.

You too can grow and mature as a believer, drawing closer to God and gaining the understanding that without Him, you also can do nothing. And are, in fact nothing.

So, what does that require?

A sincere heart and a willingness to put forth a consistent effort to get to know Him on a personal level.

It’s not complicated at all. And with dedication on our end, we can all walk with Him in a beautiful relationship that flourishes and changes our destiny.

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-5-21

1 John 1:6 (NKJV) 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.

Walking in darkness is not something we should do.

Yes, we might occasionally make a wrong choice that leads us to do or say something we shouldn’t do or say. But this should be the exception, not the rule.

As children of God, we are told that we are to walk in the light (1 John 1:7). Doing so shows evidence of our repentant heart and the fact that we are truly His.

As each of us grows in our walk with Him and our spiritual maturity, we will all be in a different place in this.

This comes over time, as we learn of God and allow Him to touch our hearts and change them, from the inside, out.

His love will transform us as we surrender to Him in various areas of our lives.

And as the years go by, we will eventually reach a place where we may no longer even recognize ourselves when compared to who we once were.

This is a process. It takes time. It doesn’t happen overnight.

We need to make the effort and be diligent in walking it out. And we need to learn to be patient as God works it out in us.

It may sometimes seem like we’re not growing as fast as we would like to be. But if we are faithful and diligent, God’s mercy and grace will shape us and mold us into a faithful servant with a heart that longs more and more to be like Him.

Amen.

Bible Verse of the Day – 10-16-20

1 Kings 8:22-23 (NKJV) 22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands toward heaven; 23 and he said: “Lord God of Israel, there is no God in heaven above or on earth below like You, who keep Your covenant and mercy with Your servants who walk before You with all their hearts.

These two verses were a small part of a lengthy prayer spoken by Solomon before the people of Israel. Solomon spoke this prayer after the ark of God had been transported and moved into the temple that he had built for God.

Today we want to focus on the last of the two verses, and more specifically, the last part of that verse; “Your servants who walk before You with all their hearts”.

As Solomon spoke before the people, he reminded them that God is faithful, as he reflected on God setting His people free from slavery in Egypt.

He then went on to address God Himself, stating that “there is no God in heaven above or on earth below like You”.

And then he qualified that statement with this: You keep your covenant and mercy with Your servants.

But he stated that God kept His covenant and mercy with a specific group or type of servant. Who were they? They were those servants “who walk before You with all their hearts”.

Now, this is not to insinuate that God always ends or nullifies His covenant, or removes His mercy, if people are unfaithful to Him. There are examples in His word where He did exactly that if He saw it was warranted.

But the emphasis here is that Solomon wanted people to understand that people whose hearts were wholly dedicated to God would receive God’s blessings in their fullness, not just in part.

This is the message we so frequently try to convey to the body of Christ. It is what we want so badly for all believers to understand.

To be clear, it isn’t even about the blessings. It’s more about that incredible walk with God that He wants us to have, so that we experience Him in His fullness and in a way that is truly life-changing.

So, we urge you today to walk before God with all your heart.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-14-20

Hebrews 5:12 (NKJV) 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.

Growing and maturing as a believer is a serious topic that we all should ponder and seek God about.

When we are born again, it is implied by various passages and texts in God’s word that we, as believers, should grow and mature.

Nowhere is it ever implied that we should remain as spiritual infants, lacking maturity or growth.

In Paul’s letter to the Corinthian believers, he scolded them for being immature. He told them plainly that he should be able to give them meat, but due to their lack of maturity he was forced to still be feeding them milk.

1 Corinthians 3:2 (NKJV) 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able;

Not growing as a believer is due to a few different factors.

One, we don’t fully understand or appreciate what Christ did for us. And, two, we don’t have someone to properly teach us beyond the basics of Christianity.

It’s up to us to learn and recognize what God has done for us through His grace and His mercy, offering forgiveness of sins through the blood of Christ. Getting understanding of this alone will usually be enough to cause us to want to learn more and more of Him, spurring up forward in our growth and maturity.

It is also up to us to dig in and learn God’s word in a way that helps us grow in our everyday lives as believers.

Most times this works best when we sit under someone (a person or organization) who can lead us and guide us in getting understanding of God’s word so it can be properly applied to our hearts and lives.

Having someone to guide us in our learning is important, as it can help us navigate through whatever parts of God’s word that we may have trouble understanding.

It also helps us when we can glean pieces of wisdom and understanding from them as they share things they have learned as they have walked through various things in their lives.

Most importantly, all of this can help us gain insight and discernment as we learn to see God move and hear Him speak to our spirit, leading and guiding us every step of the way.

If you’re interested in learning more about this, we have created a three-part video series on this topic. You can view video #1 here: The Process – Part 1.
