Tag: What the Bible says about freedom in Christ

Bible Verse of The Day – 5-21-21

John 8:36 (NKJV) 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Jesus Christ came to set us free.

What does He want to set us free from?

Sin.

Sin separates us from God. It drives a wedge between us and our Creator.

Why?

Because He is pure and holy, and sin cannot be in His presence. He can’t even look upon sin.

But Jesus, by way of the shedding of His blood on the cross, made a way for us to be cleansed and forgiven for those sins, making it possible for God to embrace us and call us His own children.

All we have to do is go to Him, admit to our sinfulness, acknowledge our need for Jesus to be our Savior, ask Him to forgive us, and then turn from our sins.

The very moment we do that, He will forgive us and set us free from our sins.

And it won’t be a temporary freedom. If we let Him, He will set us free permanently from whatever it is that’s holding us in captivity; drug and alcohol addictions, sexual addictions, lust, lying, stealing, perversions and so much more.

If it’s holding you in bondage, Jesus wants to set you free from it.

Oh, and it’s important to know that when Jesus sets us free, we are free indeed!

We are not just sort of free. We are 100% free.

Jesus doesn’t do things halfway. If He breaks the chains of bondage, He destroys every link of that chain, not just a few of them.

The only thing we have to do is to let Him. Let Him destroy the bonds that hold us in captivity. Let Him break those chains that keep us shackled.

And want to know the best part? When He sets us free, He wants us to be free for the rest of our lives.

He gives us what we need to defeat evil in our lives once and for all.

So, here’s the question we need to ask; will we let Him set us free? Will we take the things that hold us in captivity and hand them over to Him, laying them at His feet for the rest of our lives?

Only we can answer that question. What will your answer be?

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-16-21

John 8:36 (NKJV) 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

We’ve spent some time dealing with a person in prison.

Prior to going to prison, he was an alcoholic.

One day, with tears in his eyes, he said to us, “I was told you could quit drinking on your own. You just have to stop. But I say, for some it is not that easy. It’s very hard to do”.

He cried hard, knowing that his attempts to stop had failed, time after time.

The decisions he’s made over the years have repeatedly put him in prison.

God knows what people go through and He wants to help us in our struggle.

There are addictions and strongholds that man alone cannot break. We’ve got to know when we need help.

If we’re in trouble time after time, doing the same things, and nothing is getting better, then we need a stronger, more direct help that comes only from God.

Where are we today?

Do we need to be set free from a stronghold?

We know just the One to help.

God sent His Son to set us free. If we truly believe Him, and we repent and ask Him to help us, He will.

And when He sets us free, my friend, we are free indeed.

Would you pray with us today?

Dear God in heaven,

As I come to You this day, I am addicted, I’m struggling, I’m hurt,  and I am lost. I need You, Father.

I need Your deliverance, Your healing, Your helping hand to save me in this very present time of trouble.

God, I want to be set free today from the grip of sin.

I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Psalm 46:1 (NKJV) 1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.

Bible Verse of The Day – 12-7-20

2 Corinthians 3:17 (NKJV) 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

As I was sitting at my desk working on a bunch of devotionals that pastor Ellie and I had written recently, this particular scripture popped into my head. So, I figured I’d take a look at it and do some more writing.

I want to look at two things today; a cause and the effect of that cause.

Now, let’s clarify that a cause is really an action or a circumstance. The effect will be the result of that action or that circumstance.

First, the cause.

The very first part of this scripture establishes one thing; that the Lord is the Spirit.

Now that this is established, we can move on to the actual cause.

The cause (action or circumstance) is this; the presence of the Spirit of the Lord.

So, what is the effect of the presence of the Spirit of the Lord?

There is liberty!

Liberty is a big word when it comes to what it can mean.

Freedom, emancipation from bondage, divine privilege.

You see, God is a God who sets us free. He doesn’t just “save us”. He wants to give us true freedom. Freedom from sin, freedom from anxiety, freedom from hopelessness, freedom from depression, freedom from oppression, and freedom from so many other things that would try to keep us tied down and bound.

It isn’t as complicated as so many might make it seem.

The presence of God’s Spirit equals liberty (freedom). Where the Spirit of God is, there can be no sin, no bondage, no depression, no anxiety, etc.

Where these things do exist, we need to invite and allow the Spirit of God to be present and to dwell in all of His fullness.

Then, and only then, will we see true freedom.

Bible Verse of The Day – 4-29-20

Galatians 5:1 (NKJV) 1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

Stand fast: Remain where you are. Don’t stray. Don’t wander. Don’t leave where you are.

All of these indicate that if we are in Christ, we need to stay put, not wandering from where we are.

We have been given salvation, liberty, and freedom from the bondage of the law and of the flesh, by God’s grace.

By this salvation, Christ has made us free!

Never again should we be entangled, enslaved or burdened by the yoke of bondage, manmade religion and rituals, with its rules, laws and burdens.

Jesus didn’t die for us so we could brush off what He did and tangle ourselves up in the bondage of religion.

On the contrary, He died to set us free from these types of entanglements.

The verse above was written by Paul, warning Christians of that time not to allow themselves to become tied up in the Jewish law.

In today’s times, there is even more that we can get caught up in, causing us to forget what Jesus did for us, and, more importantly, why He did it.

He died not only to save us from our sinful selves, but also to allow us access to the Father, without having to jump through hoops to obtain that access.

Stand fast, and do not be entangled again.

Bible Verse of The Day – 12-18-19

John 10:10 (NKJV) 10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

It’s funny how the world will pervert the things of God, turn them upside down and then convince people that it is truth.

Think about it. We hear so much about different kinds of “freedom”. The “freedom” to be who we want to be, no matter what that is. The “freedom” to do what we want to do. The “freedom” to act the way we want to act.

At a quick glance, there might not seem to be anything wrong with this. After all, didn’t Jesus come to set us free?

Well, yes. But not that kind of free.

Many, many times, the things that we hear about freedom are twisted, perverted versions of freedom. Biblical truth has been either removed or warped in some way that causes it to become quite contrary to what God intended.

We see it a lot these days, and it is truly very sad, because much of it leads people into bondage, not into freedom.

If it feels good, do it. It’s your life, so just live it the way you want. Be whoever and whatever you want to be.

These are just a few of the catch phrases that we hear tossed around to represent what we’re told is freedom. There are many, many more.

This is the world’s version of freedom vs. true freedom in Christ. One isn’t freedom at all. The other is true freedom.

How do we know true freedom from the counterfeit offered by the enemy?

The counterfeit will lead us into things that we feel trapped in; adultery, sodomy, addictions, fornication, thievery, rebellion and much more. In the end, they all lead to death, either spiritually or physically.

Oh, they might seem like freedom at first because we are doing whatever we choose. But sooner or later the walls begin to close in on us, or come crashing down around us. And then we are scurrying around, looking for a way out.

Jesus is the way out. He is the way to freedom. The freedom He brings will deliver us from the counterfeit freedom that the world has promised us.

And the best part about freedom in Jesus is that it is true freedom, not smoke and mirrors or something fake.

So, if you have been told you’re free, but you don’t really feel free, you probably aren’t.

John 8:36 (NKJV) 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-2-19

Galatians 5:13 (NKJV) 13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

We have been called to liberty.

Jesus came and walked among us to show us and teach us how to walk in freedom. And then He died, willingly, to make that freedom available to us.

His death was not in vain. He had a specific purpose; Freedom from sin and death for those who would choose to follow Him and apply His sacrifice to their own lives on a personal level.

We can choose to follow Him and walk in the freedom that He has offered us. Or we can follow Him and tie ourselves down with so many things.

Sometimes the things that tie us down are things that we have pulled into our relationship with Him. How does this happen?

We put our faith in Christ, which sets us free, and then we begin to entangle ourselves in things that we think are part of Christianity, only to become less and less free as time goes by. Before we know it, we are a slave to religion, whereas God has called us to become slaves to righteousness.

Romans 6:18 (NKJV) 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

Being a slave to righteousness is not slavery at all! But, rather, true freedom in Christ. Because as we embrace Christ and grow in our relationship with Him, we shake off the chains of sin, leaving us free to experience a full, abundant life in Christ.

And this is why God doesn’t want us entangling ourselves in chains again through religious bondage or other types of things that ensnare us.

John 8:36 (NKJV) 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Bible Verse of The Day – 5-31-19

Romans 3:21-22 (NKJV) 21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe…

After centuries of following the tenets of the law, God saw fit to set people free through the blood of Jesus Christ.

No longer are we required to follow every little letter of the law, trying desperately to get it right.

Now, instead, we have been set free in Christ, living under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The verse above says that this is the righteousness of God, apart from the law, that has been revealed. And it is available to us through faith in Christ.

There are no rituals required. There is no schedule to follow. There are no specific prayers to pray. We don’t even need a priest!

God has made it possible for us to have direct access to Him, through Jesus.

The veil of the temple was torn in two when Christ died, giving us access to the holy of holies.

Mark 15:38 (NKJV) 38 Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

We should no longer live as though we are under the law, feeling tied to man-made traditions and ceremonies.

It’s time to be set free from the constraints of religion and live in the freedom that Jesus died to give us all.

Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 5-21-19

Romans 8:1-2 (NKJV) 1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

There is no condemnation, damnation or criticism to us, Sons and Daughters in Christ. Isn’t that awesome to know?

We are free, as we walk according to the Spirit. This means that we sincerely try to do what God wants or expects from us.

Sometimes we might feel like we are dying because of the effort and discipline we have to put towards it. But its important to remember that our efforts are pleasing to our Lord, and well worth it.

Just imagine the Lord saying to us, “well done”!

Matthew 25:21 (NKJV) 21 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’

Be encouraged today. God sees your efforts. He sees you pressing in at times when it would be easier to give up. He is pleased with you for sticking it out and doing the right thing in spite of the circumstances around you.

Good things don’t come when we sit back and do nothing. It takes hard work and pressing through. It takes walking according to the Spirit, not the flesh. Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 6-6-18

1 Timothy 1:15 (NKJV) 15 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.

As we read this verse, it’s important that we apply it to ourselves, despite the fact that it was written by the apostle Paul.

We’ve all done things that we’re not proud of. Some may be “small” and others not so small. But sin is sin in God’s eyes. It’s important that we also view it as such.

You and I all stand guilty; each and every one of us. And short of God’s redemption through Jesus, we all stand condemned.

But Jesus came to set us free from our sins and the condemnation that comes with that sin.

Ephesians 1:7 (NKJV) 7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace…

Thank you, God, for setting me, the worst of sinners, free through the blood of Jesus, without Whom I would be eternally lost and without hope. You have taken me from darkness, into your eternal light. Amen
