1 Corinthians 3:4 (NKJV) 4 For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal?
It is not uncommon to hear Christians label themselves by the doctrine or the teacher that they follow.
Sometimes it’s a denominational name. Other times it’s the name of a man or woman that they have received certain doctrinal teachings from which they follow very closely.
Some of this can be harmless, even though quite unnecessary. But other times it is purely carnal behavior, as mentioned by Paul in the verse above.
In the end, it is God that matters. The person who led us to Christ, or the denomination we follow is insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Paul puts it this way;
1 Corinthians 3:6-7 (NKJV) 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase.
So, we need to be careful as to what labels we stick on ourselves, because God must always be at the forefront and the One who receives the glory and honor for all that is done.
Let us not fall into the habit of boasting or labeling ourselves by anyone’s name, except by the name of our one and only Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Galatians 6:14 (NKJV) 14 But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
