Tag: What the Bible says about being broken before God

Bible Verse of The Day – 2-7-24

Job 42:5-6 (NKJV) 5 “I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, But now my eye sees You. 6 Therefore I abhor myself, And repent in dust and ashes.”

The book of Job is an incredible resource for every believer to learn from.

It can teach us a lot about who God is and how we, His children, are not immune to trials and tribulations.

More importantly, Job can teach us what true humility is.

Job is known for facing great adversity and enduring great physical trauma, as well as losing virtually everything that was dear to him. That great loss included all of his children.

Add to this the fact that all of this happened in less than 24 hours, and it is easy to see why the book of Job is a treasure trove of knowledge and learning for every human being.

As the attacks on Job destroyed everything he had, and his health was attacked, Job’s friends gathered around him.

One might think that having your friends gathered around you during a trial is a good thing. But in this situation, that was not the case.

Job’s friends literally took turns pointing out what they believed to be Job’s shortcomings and failures.

Even his wife urged him to “curse God and die” (Job 2:9).

Throughout his discussions with his friends, Job insisted that he was innocent, and he did not deserve to be facing this catastrophic trial.

He even took offense with God, claiming that he was being unjustly punished.

As part of his discussions with his friends, he demanded an audience with God, so he could plead his case and prove his innocence.

God eventually gave Job what he had asked for, speaking directly with him.

When God was finished, Job saw the error of his ways, realizing that he had, in fact, been prideful and arrogant.

It was at this point that Job spoke the words above, in Job 42:5-6.

Some might simply skim over those words, giving them no weight.

But look at Job’s heart in those words. “I abhor myself, And repent in dust and ashes”.

We need to realize how broken Job had become as a result of his encounter with God.

He recognized his failures and repented openly before God, expressing his genuine remorse for his sins.

How many of us have allowed ourselves to become broken, as Job did, abhorring ourselves and repenting in dust and ashes because of things we have done, said or thought?

Let us endeavor in our hearts to become as submissive and surrendered to God as Job was. Doing so will be life changing, at the very least.

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-16-17

Psalm 51:17 (NKJV) 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart – These, O God, You will not despise.

Brokenness. That word alone conjures up images of someone who is hurting and in pain. That person has probably endured intense suffering and heartbreak of some kind.

Nobody likes being broken. It hurts. It crushes our spirit.

But being broken is where we need to be before God can truly work in our lives.

This doesn’t mean that we have to go through tragedy to be broken. But it does mean that we have to reach a place where we bow before God and lay ourselves at His feet, in surrender.

Isaiah 66:2 (NKJV) 2 For all those things My hand has made, And all those things exist,” Says the Lord. “But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My word.

Reverence for God is a huge part of being broken before Him. When we have reached a place of beginning to understand His awesomeness, and we develop a holy fear of Him, then, and only then, will we truly understand being broken before Him.

Many times we will tell God to break us. We pray for Him to break our will and humble us, bringing us into complete submission to Him. But this is a false notion. God does not desire to break us. He desires for us to come to Him in our brokenness.

Asking God to break us is akin to giving Him permission to cause trials and calamity to come raining down upon us in order to drive us to the ground and have no other place to turn, except to Him.

This is a dangerous prayer, to say the least. Listen to these words of Jesus on this topic.

Matthew 21:44 (NKJV) 44 And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”

Those are words of powerful truth on this topic.

So it’s critically important that we understand this and let God adjust our thinking on this subject. Once we get this, it changes the way we see things, perceive things and do things.

We will no longer pray and ask God to break us. Instead, we will pray and tell God how much we love Him, honor Him and need Him. And as we do this, we will find ourselves kneeling or laying at His feet, in total surrender, broken before Him.

BIble Verse of The Day – 7-6-15

Psalm 51:17 (NKJV) 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart—These, O God, You will not despise.

In today’s society, broken things get tossed aside… hidden away or disposed of because they are thought to be of no use.

Sometimes we might feel like we’re broken and of no use to anyone. We’ve made mistakes, bad choices and just blown it all the way around. And now we’re laying flat on our back, looking up.

We might even feel like it’s all over and nobody can love us. We might feel like even God can’t help us.

We feel like we’re through. We just want to throw in the towel and forget about everything.

But God loves it when we’re broken before Him!

No, it’s not that He loves to see us hurting. Not at all. But until we are broken before Him, He can never really use us!

You see, we have to reach the end of ourselves before God can take what’s left, rebuild it and breathe new life into it and then make us into who He wants us to be.

Then, and only then can He mold us, shape us and clean up those rough edges and make something brand new out of us.

So if you feel like you’re broken and useless, and worn out from life’s battles, take heart! Because you’re really only just beginning.

And new beginnings are God’s specialty.

Bible Verse of The Day – 4-4-15

Psalm 51:17 (NKJV) 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart – These, O God, You will not despise.

As I pondered on what to write about today, I heard God drop one word into my spirit. Contrite.

I did some pondering before putting this together. Much can be said for having a contrite heart.

To be contrite means to be remorseful for a sin or shortcoming. This goes far beyond just being sorry that we did something. It means that we are genuinely regretful for doing it, but we also want to change our habits so we don’t do it again.

This is what God honors. And it’s this type of attitude that draws us to God and allows Him to draw near to us.

Humility is what helps to bridge the gap between God and us because when we have humbled ourselves, we are no longer telling God that we had an excuse for what we did. We’re just at the point where we simply want to fix what’s wrong and make it right.

As humans, we tend to look at broken things as being disposable. We throw them away and buy new ones.

But God looks at broken people as the starting point for something great. Because once we’re broken, then He can work to rebuild us, from the ground, up.

And when He’s finished, we’re not just a repaired, repainted version of the old us. We’re brand new, from top to bottom. God doesn’t just fix broken stuff. He makes it new again.

So, as you read this, if you feel like you’ve let Him down again, take a minute (or more) and do something about it. It’s never too late.

We can change today if we really want to and if we let Him help us and show us how.

He’s always ready and able to help us. We just have to be willing to let Him.

Today’s the day. Let Him rebuild you from the ground, up, and make you brand new.
