Bible Verse of The Day – 2-29-24

Ecclesiastes 1:14 (NKJV) 14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

What is it that we are trying to accomplish each day? What or whom are we chasing after?

Lately I have been taking a good look at my life to see if I am spending my time here on this earth wisely.

Think about it, we only have so many years here. And they go by quickly; more quickly than most of us realize.

Am I doing what God has called me to do, or am I just mimicking the way we think we are supposed to do things according to this world?

Boy, wouldn’t the devil love to get all God’s children grasping for the wind?

Jesus didn’t have a place to lay His head. He didn’t have a place He called home. He was always busy doing His Father’s will.

Now, we understand Jesus was God’s Son, and He was perfect. His mission was clear.

But even though He was God in the flesh, He had emotions, feelings, desires and needs. He was a man, just like we are. He got tired.

Matthew 8:20 (NKJV) 20 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”

There was nowhere for Him to lay His head. He kept focused on His purpose and didn’t worry about comfort and material things.

That is the word I keep hearing over and over. Keep focused!

Wake up each day and know what we are going to do for the day. Have a plan and stick to it. Don’t stray from it unless the Holy Spirit leads us in another direction.

2 Timothy 4:2 (NKJV) 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.

Life here is temporary. This place is not home. It’s our mission field.

And our time here goes by quickly. So, let us be busy each day spreading the good news and being ready, in season and out of season.

If we do this, we will not miss out on anything worthwhile, for the rest is all vanity.

Let us not be grasping for the wind. Follow God’s purpose, not the worlds way of living!

Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 12-11-23

Ecclesiastes 1:14 (NKJV) 14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

As someone who likes to give what I do 100% effort, or not do it at all, I can say that there are some things in life that I have done quite passionately.

I have given them my all.

And now that I am older, I look back at my years more frequently.

In doing so, I tend to reflect on many of those things that I spent my time pursuing. And I can honestly say that most of it is vanity and chasing after the wind.

This does not mean that I should have chosen not to do them all. It simply means that some of the things I did have little meaning in the grand scheme of things.

Even today, looking at the here and now, there are things that I am passionate about that God has shown me have little or no benefit to me or others around me.

And this causes me to ponder more deeply on what I choose to spend my time doing. I seek God more seriously when I contemplate doing something.

He is, after all, the One I am accountable to for everything I do. And He is the One I want to lead me in every step I take.

None of this is said to insinuate that our lives should be joyless and dull.

But the truth is that our lives were meant to bring glory and honor to God in all that we do.

Serving God is never dull. Truly living for His kingdom will change the way we think, and the way we see and perceive everything around us.

So, as we embark on any journey, or we endeavor to do something, let us do it with our hearts intent on doing it in a way that will please our Father and shine His light for others to see and recognize.

Let us not put our hope in the things of this world. But let us seek Him wholeheartedly and choose our steps wisely and with Him at the forefront of all we do, doing what we do passionately for His kingdom.

Bible Verse of The Day – 4-10-23

Ecclesiastes 1:14 (NKJV) 14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

Last July I turned 60 years old.

It was kind of a weird feeling, to be honest.

I don’t feel 60. Not at all. I love the outdoors and I love to be active; bass fishing, bike riding, walking and just taking in the beauty of God’s incredible creation.

Despite still doing all of that, I am 60. And because I’m 60, I have seen some stuff.

I haven’t traveled around the world. It’s not really that kind of stuff that I’m referring to.

When I say that I’ve seen a lot of things, I’m referring to everyday things; stuff that we all see in life. And over the many years of my life, I have grown to love some things about life.

But I will readily tell you that almost everything that people love or get excited about is vanity and grasping for the wind.

Some of the things that would be exceptions to this would be our walk with God, the love we share with our spouse, our family and our children.

All else, including hobbies, careers, physical appearance, material possessions, financial status, social status, etc., are all nothing more than vanity and chasing after the wind.

You see, in the end. All that matters is our relationship with our Creator, the God of heaven and earth.

He is the One who breathed life into us. He is the One who gave our heart the rhythm of its beat. He is the One who spoke the worlds into existence. And He is the One who redeemed us through the blood of His only Son, Jesus Christ.

So, it’s important that we truly understand this and keep everything in its proper perspective and proper place.

And when we feel like we’re starting to get caught up in the things and the ways of this world, let us be reminded that it is all vanity and grasping for the wind; a vapor that passes as quickly as it materialized.

Pursue God and put Him first in everything. In that alone is true satisfaction.

Bible Verse of The Day – 10-25-19

Psalm 37:4 (NKJV) 4 Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

We wrote a devotional recently based on James 4:14 (life is a vapor) and Ecclesiastes 1:14 (all is vanity and grasping for the wind). In it, we asked the question, “what is life?”.

In response, we had a reader write and ask if this contradicts the idea that life is a gift from God. So, we wanted to clarify this to avoid any kind of misunderstanding.

To answer the question directly, life is definitely a gift from God, no matter how we look at it.

But, to make sense of this and divide the gift from the vapor and the grasping for the wind, let’s break it down a bit further.

When we have the gift of life, given to us by God himself, the question comes down to what we do with it. Do we simply live it as though it is our own, with no accountability to our Creator? Or do we give it to Him and let Him direct our paths?

That right there will determine how we see life as a whole.

James spoke of life being like a vapor. A lifespan is short when compared to eternity. We are here and then gone in a very short time, just as a vapor that comes and goes very quickly.

Solomon spoke about how so much of the way we spend our lives is simply grasping for the wind. Life itself is not grasping for the wind. But the way we spend it can be.

Do we delight ourselves in the Lord, as mentioned in the verse above?

This verse in Proverbs sums it all up nicely:

Proverbs 3:6 (NKJV) 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

You see, if we delight ourselves in Him, and we acknowledge Him in all we do, our lives will never be like grasping for the wind. On the contrary, they will be blessed in so many ways. Psalm 37:4 says He will give us the desires of our heart.

Now that doesn’t sound like grasping for the wind, does it?

It’s all about perspective, and about the choices we make during our ever-so-short lives.

What will we choose? Will we choose to delight ourselves in Him? Will we acknowledge Him in all our ways?

The answers to those two questions will outweigh everything else about our lives.
