Bible Verse of The Day – 11-13-19

Philippians 2:7 (NKJV) 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.

Jesus “made Himself of no reputation”.

It might also be translated as “He emptied Himself”.

Jesus did not, however, empty Himself of His deity. He simply voluntarily set aside His privileges as God, rendering Himself a mere man, walking out His earthly life as a servant to humanity.

He became fully human, yet He did so while remaining without sin; something no other human can ever accomplish.

He took on “the form of a bondservant”.

In choosing to become a human, His purpose was to serve and obey the will of the Father, even to the point of being willing to lay down His life.

Bondservants were considered to be the lowest status on the social ladder in those times. This is the exact opposite of Him being called “Lord”, which is indicative of one who reigns over all.

As he also did in verse 6, Paul chose to use a Greek word for “form”, indicating exact essence. So, He wasn’t just an imitator. He was a true servant.

And He came “in the likeness of men”.

Jesus did not just appear to be a man. He was more than just God in a human body. Being so would not have sufficed or allowed Him to fulfill His purpose here on earth.

The word “likeness” emphasizes identity. In other words, He was a man in every aspect.

He took on all the essential attributes of humanity, even identifying with basic human needs and weaknesses.

He felt hunger, anger, sadness, betrayal, disappointment, joy, happiness, pain, sorrow and temptation.

Unlike all other humans, though, Jesus was sinless.

Hebrews 4:15 (NKJV) 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.

Bible Verse of The Day – 11-12-19

Philippians 2:6 (NKJV) 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God…

Jesus wasn’t just a man who had God-like characteristics. He was, and always had been, God.

John 1:1 (NKJV) 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He chose to limit Himself while here on earth, so He could walk among us as a human. So, in Christ, God became man.

If we take the word “form” in the wrong context, it could possibly cause us to think that Jesus wasn’t fully God. But when Paul chose the Greek word for “form”, he chose one of two different possible words.

The word he chose specifically indicates the critical, unchanging, unceasing character of something; its very essence, or what it is in and of itself, not needing anyone or anything else to affirm it, prove it or validate it.

Because Christ was God, He did not consider it robbery to share God’s nature.

The Greek word for “robbery” was translated as such because it was originally part of the phrase “seized by robbery”.

The implication here is that Jesus didn’t feel the need to “seize”, “grasp” or “hold tightly to” His deity, His position, because there was no chance that He could lose it, be disqualified from it or have it taken from Him.

Yet, He was willing to give them up for a season, limiting Himself in such a way that He could become human and walk out the task of the redemption of man through His own death, burial and resurrection.

Colossians 1:15-17 (NKJV) 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.

Bible Verse of The Day – 11-11-19

Philippians 2:5 (NKJV) 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus…

Most of the devotionals that we write each day revolve around the real-life application of the word of God to our lives. We take what God has shown us and taught us about trusting Him, and applying His words and principles to our lives, and we share it with others.

This helps others to take God’s word, apply it to their lives to strengthen their walk with Him, and to help them grow into mature believers who trust in and lean on God for everything.

After all, if we read God’s word, but we don’t understand how to apply it to our lives, how much can we really benefit from it?

Sometimes, though, we will also dig into topics that help us get a better understanding of things that are a bit deeper, especially when it comes to understanding who God is. This helps us increase our knowledge and understanding, giving us a stronger foundation, upon which everything else rests.

Today we will kick off a series of devotionals on Philippians 2:5-11, where we will take a bit closer look at Jesus while He was here on earth, and what that means to us as children of God.

So, today, let’s get started with verse 5!

Verse 5 tells us to “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus”.

When Paul says, “Let this mind be in you”, what is he referring to?

Quite simply, Paul is telling us to be humble, selfless and unselfish, using Christ as our model.

It’s important to note that Paul specifically mentions the mind. Not the heart, not the emotions, not the spirit.

This has a direct reference to Romans 12:12, where we are told not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

Simply stated, if we don’t let God renew our minds, and change the way we think, we will have a hard time understanding most of what He wants of us.

Our actions are the result of the thoughts we think. If our thoughts are corrupt or twisted, so also will our actions be corrupt and twisted.

In summary, our goal as believers is to imitate Christ, humbling ourselves, being willing to set our own desires aside whenever it’s necessary, and show the world His love by our words and our actions.

Bible Verse of The Day – 7-24-19

Isaiah 55:9 (NKJV) 9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.

Have you ever stopped and wondered why there are so many people who just plain refuse to acknowledge that God is real?

Most of the time it’s because they just can’t understand Him.

Oh, it’s not really that they can’t understand Him. It’s more that they can’t comprehend how He could be real.

They can’t fathom how He could speak the world into existence. They can’t understand how He could make a man from dirt and breathe life into him. They can’t grasp the fact that He made everything that we see, hear and smell.

It just doesn’t make sense to them! And because it doesn’t make sense to them, they refuse to accept it as truth.

The problem is that they are trying to understand it with their natural minds. They are trying to grasp Someone who is bigger than their minds can think. So, in their minds, it can’t possibly be true or real.

And that’s because He is bigger than our minds! Not a single one of us can truly comprehend God with our natural minds. But the cool part is that He doesn’t ask us to.

Instead, He reveals Himself to us by His spirit. And it is only by Him that we can see past our finite minds and see the infinite possibilities that He is who He says He is!

And it’s important that we remember that this applies to every one of us. Had God not revealed Himself to us, we would be just as blind as the unbeliever and the scoffer.

It is by His grace and mercy that we are called His children. Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 5-25-18

Isaiah 55:9 (NKJV) 9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.

Most times, when God moves or does something for us, we can never really wrap our heads around how He did it or why He chose to do it the way He did.

That’s because we’re not God!

It’s funny how we as humans keep spending time trying to figure God out. If we could just find it in ourselves to spend that much time pursuing God, instead of trying to figure Him out, we’d be much better off.

You see, our walk with Him should never be based on figuring Him out or trying to completely understand His ways. But, instead, it should be based on drawing near to Him and trusting Him, knowing that He always has our best interests at heart.

James 4:8 (NKJV) 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you…

Bible Verse of The Day – 5-24-17

Isaiah 55:9 (NKJV) 9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.

There are a lot of things happening in the world that we may not understand. Many times people will point a finger at God and ask why He doesn’t stop these things from happening.

Sometimes we question why God does the things He does or why He doesn’t intervene in certain situations.

Sometimes we ask questions simply out of curiosity. Other times we ask with an accusatory tone that says we know better than God does.

Whatever the situation and whatever our question might be, we need to always remember that God knows more than we do. He sees the big picture, while we see with finite eyes and limited understanding.

It’s not wrong to be curious or to wonder why certain things happen. Sometimes it can even be good to ask and wonder.

But if we find ourselves questioning God’s sovereignty or His reasoning, then it’s time for us to go back to His word and let Him remind us of who He is.

His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts.
