Matthew 6:28-32 (NKJV) 28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
Hoarding. It’s something that most of us never think about. But what is it, and what are its implications in the life of a believer?
Hoard: to accumulate money, food, or the like, in a hidden or carefully guarded place for preservation, future use, etc.
Hoarding is contrary to God’s word. Why? Because it essentially, at its deepest root, shows a lack of trust in God’s ability to provide for us. Things that are hoarded are there, many times, “just in case”. Just in case God doesn’t supply our needs.
There is a delicate balance between hoarding and using our resources wisely or being responsible and diligent with our finances and physical resources. God does teach us to be diligent and responsible with what He blesses us with. But that doesn’t mean that we need to cling to and hold on to everything that we have.
We are to hold onto some of it. But we are to give some of it too. And it’s only when we learn to hear God’s voice and discern His instructions to us that we can properly handle the things we have.
And when we do that, when we start to let go of some of those precious things that we hold so dearly to, only then will we see God bless us again and again. Sharing our blessings with others opens the door for more blessings to flow into our lives.
So as God has blessed us with things, whether it’s finances or other material possessions, it’s imperative that we learn, not just to hoard them and hold onto them, but to learn to share them with others who are in need.
We need to trust Him. We need to share when He says to share. We need to help those who are in need. And then we can watch as He replenishes the “supply closet” that we willingly shared with others who He led us to share it with.
Be wise with our resources. Hold when He says when to hold. And share when He says to share.
