Bible Verse of The Day – 1-27-23

Matthew 6:19 (NKJV) 19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;

When I was young, I liked to buy things. Sometimes I would spend a lot of time just looking for something to buy.

Now that I am not so young, this is no longer the case.

Don’t get me wrong. I still enjoy buying something occasionally, but typically only if it’s something that I need.

I have learned that the more things we own, the more problems we have because those things break or fail us.

And those things don’t bring us happiness in the truest sense of the word.

They may bring us pleasure for a time, but that pleasure fades. The excitement dissipates, usually rather quickly, and then we tend to move on to the next thing we want to buy.

Let us not spend the money that God blesses us with on things that rust, break down, fade or get stolen by thieves.

Let us, instead, spend our time, money and effort storing up treasures in heaven.

We need to let God teach us how He wants us to handle our finances and the things we spend our money on. If we do this, it will change the way we look at our finances. It will change our spending habits.

And it will even change what we like and don’t like regarding what we buy. The things we used to like to spend our money on will fade away into the distant past as God transforms our heart and mind.

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-8-18

Matthew 6:19-21 (NKJV) 19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Where do our treasures lie? Are they in the material things that we possess? Or are they in the things of God, the things He shows us and the things that draw us closer to Him?

As we endeavor to draw nearer to Him and strengthen our relationship with Him, the things that are in our heart will either help us or hinder us in our walk with Him.

The things of this world can develop a very strong grip on our hearts if we’re not careful to guard it.

Proverbs 4:23 (NLT) 23 Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

Everything that we set our minds and hands to do takes up our time and requires our effort to accomplish. Many times, we don’t see or understand how many “little extras” are required when we get involved in something or buy a new possession.

We might take on a task and only see the surface of it, the time or effort that we think is involved. But, once we’re into it, it actually requires much more time and energy to pursue and master. And each minute or hour we give up to this is less time that we have in our relationship with God.

It’s important that we count the cost and not make sudden or rash decisions and choices.

Luke 14:28 (NKJV) 28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it

We obviously need some “down time” once in a while. God isn’t against us spending time doing things we enjoy. But He also wants us to make our choices carefully, letting His spirit lead us as we make those choices and decisions.

And if we can learn to do that on a regular basis, we’ll find ourselves getting into less things that cause us to become too busy and preoccupied with activities that can suck up our time and energy, leaving God in last place.

Bible Verse of The Day – 6-9-17

Proverbs 3:9-10 (NKJV) 9 Honor the Lord with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase; 10 So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine.

Honoring God with our finances is critical to our financial stability and wellbeing.

Many of us go through financial trials. It happens to just about everyone at some point. Sometimes this happens due to poor choices on our part. Other times it happens due to things that are beyond our control.

But no matter how or why it happens, one thing is for sure. And that is this; if we honor God with our finances, He will protect us and provide for us no matter what comes along.

There is protection that comes when we honor God with our money. It’s a spiritual principle that was set in motion by God Himself.

How we honor God with our finances (or not) also says a lot about our faith and trust in Him. Why? Because, most times, our money comes by way of hard work on our part. And to most of us our money is a prized possession that we are not willing to part with easily.

But if we truly trust God with everything else, we will also trust Him with our finances too. Jesus said this about it:

Matthew 6:19 (NKJV) 19 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

In the verses leading up to 19, Jesus had been speaking specifically about storing up treasures here on earth. He encouraged us to store up treasures in heaven, instead, and not to place so much value on money and earthly possessions.

And lastly, it is mentioned in several places that God wants us to give of our firstfruits. This means that we need to honor Him first, before anything/anyone else. Not give Him the leftovers after we have paid everyone else and spent more of it on earthly goods and possessions.

This is a hard teaching for many of us because it hits us in the wallet and causes us to really ask ourselves why we’re not giving God priority in our finances.

So we urge you to ask God about this and seek Him on this. And then put Him first, even with your money. And over time, you will see God move on your behalf, again and again, even when it looks like the rug has been pulled from under your feet.

Trust Him.

Bible Verse of The Day – 10-21-16

Matthew 6:19-20 (NKJV) 19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.

Material things. Stuff. Possessions. There are lots of different names for what we own. What’s important is not what it’s called, but what place those things hold in our hearts.

There’s no doubt that we live in a materialistic world. It’s all around us, no matter where we look. And we’re constantly inundated with advertising that touts the latest and the greatest of products.

But as followers of Christ, we need to let the Holy Spirit help us discern when it comes to the things we buy and the things we spend our money on.

So many times we’re not satisfied unless we’re constantly getting bigger and better things. We buy homes that have more rooms than we know what to do with. Or we keep adding on and/or improving them so they feature the newest and best in amenities.

And the cars we drive get more and more expensive, sporting the newest in luxuries, the fastest engines or the latest and greatest in technology.

Are these wrong? Not necessarily. That’s between us and God. We need to seek Him any time we spend the money He has blessed us with. After all, it’s not really our money. He has simply entrusted us with it, to be good stewards of it.

But we all need to understand that living lives of excess isn’t good stewardship. We need to know when “enough is enough”. Again, knowing and understanding this is always between God and each individual.

There is no magic line that we cross that suddenly says “you have too much”. But as we grow and mature as believers, we will be able to see these things more easily and make wiser choices.

Where do our treasures lie?

Bible Verse of The Day – 6-4-16

Matthew 6:19-21 (NKJV) 19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

We’re born. We live. We die.

Our lives are brief compared to eternity. So what do we do with our lives while we’re here on earth?

Modern culture tells us that we should work hard to climb the ladder of success. You know, own a home, drive a nice car and work a great job.

“Make a lot of money”, says the world. “The more money you make, the happier you will be”.

But what did Jesus say? “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth“.

That sounds quite the opposite of what most of us are taught!

No, it’s not wrong to be successful. No, it’s not wrong to have nice things.

But where is our heart? Are we spending more time and effort chasing after these things than we are chasing after God?

Something for us to think about.

Ecclesiastes 1:14 (NKJV) 14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.
