Bible Verse of The Day – 9-28-20

2 Corinthians 6:17 (NKJV) 17 Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.”

This is a verse that I haven’t read, thought about or pondered on for a long time.

But today God brought it back to my remembrance. And I knew it was time for me to take another, deeper look at it.

Most believers already know that this verse does not mean that we are to literally, physically separate ourselves from unbelievers. This would be virtually impossible.

Additionally, doing so would not fit what God’s word tells us when it comes to being a light to a dark world, being a city on a hill (Matthew 5:14) or not hiding our light under a basket (Matthew 5:15).

We need to let our light so shine before men! And we can’t do that if we do not interact with others.

Matthew 5:16 (NKJV) 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

So, now that we have firmly established that fact, let’s look more closely at what it means to be separate while not being separated.

It’s important that we understand that this verse is really speaking symbolically about our behavior, which stems from what’s in our hearts. What’s in our hearts will manifest outwardly in our actions, even if our words might say something different.

As long as our heart is still united with the things of the world, our outward actions will not change enough to significantly matter.

Paul actually took pieces of this verse from Isaiah 52:11, where the Israelites were commanded to remove themselves from their lands of exile and return home to Jerusalem, but not to bring any of the idols from their foreign lands home with them.

Similarly, we need to be sure not to bring pieces of the world with us as we mature from earthly (carnal) thinking to heavenly (Godly, Spirit-led) thinking.

It is irrational (unreasonable, illogical, absurd) to think that we, as believers, can be united with (bound to, joined together with) unbelievers and the ways (the habits and the thinking) of the world in our actions and our behavior.

Jesus was our example in this as He walked this earth, interacting with others from all walks of life without taking on their habits or behavior. He remained pure from start to finish.

This was confirmed for us here in Hebrews;

Hebrews 7:26 (NKJV) 26 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens;

It’s time for us to take this seriously and put action behind our words.

It’s time for us to let God circumcise our hearts once and for all, helping us to shed those foreskins (the idols of our former lives) that keep us tied to the ways of the world.

Bible Verse of The Day – 7-26-19

2 Corinthians 6:17 (NKJV) 17 Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord.

As believers, most of us have heard this verse at least once. And if we’ve been a believer for a long time, it’s safe to assume that we have probably heard it many times.

The question is this; have we followed what it tells us to do?

Have we “come out from among them” and separated ourselves from the world in a significant way?

There are many ways we can do this, without actually moving out into the forest somewhere and living in isolation. In fact, isolating ourselves isn’t what this scripture is really referring to anyway.

But have we separated ourselves in our actions, our behavior, in ways that differentiate us from the rest of the people around us? Or do we just blend in and act like whoever we happen to be around at any given moment?

In the verses leading up to this one, Paul is speaking to the Corinthian Christians and encouraging them to come away from the worldly behaviors such as lawlessness and idol worship.

That’s a good place for us to start looking at our own lives. How similar are we to the world in the things we do and the things we involve ourselves in?

It’s pretty safe to assume that we don’t literally bow down to physical idols. But are our hearts attached to or involved with “things” that we esteem more highly than we should?

Things like movies, celebrities, hobbies, etc. can all become our idols.

Our behavior can also be something to consider. The way we act, the things we say, the words we use are all ways that we can attach ourselves to or separate ourselves from the world.

No matter who we are, we can all use a little “checkup” once in a while. It’s good for us to look at what we do and let God show us where we might need to make adjustments, whether big or small.

So, don’t worry about packing up your things and moving out into the woods somewhere. But let’s ask God how to separate ourselves in ways that are pleasing to Him 🙂

Bible Verse of The Day – 6-3-15

2 Corinthians 6:17 (NKJV) 17 Therefore “Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you.”

God has chosen to dwell in each of us if we are His child.

Because of this, there are things that we should and should not do. He is a holy God and wants us to live holy lives.

We are made righteous by the blood of Christ, clean before God, with our sins forgiven.

We are, however, called to live lives that are pleasing to Him, doing our best to stay away from things that are unholy.

Coming out from among them doesn’t necessarily refer to physically segregating ourselves from the world. It does refer to differentiating ourselves from the world in our behavior.

According to Galatians 5:19-21, here are some of the things we need to avoid: adultery, fornication, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like.

And those are just some of the things we are to avoid!

What’s equally important is the condition of our heart, too. We can avoid all of the things that God tells us to stay away from, but if our heart is far from Him, we are just going through the motions and our abstaining is nothing more than legalism.

But when our heart longs after God and truly wants to please Him, we will do whatever is necessary to avoid the things that displease God and do everything we can to please Him.

So let’s ask ourselves today; where is our heart? Do we partake of the things that displease Him, or do we live to please Him?

Only we can answer that question.
