Bible Verse of The Day – 11-2-18

James 1:2 (NKJV) 26 If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.

The word “think” in this verse is very important!

We think we are religious, but then we open our mouth every time we feel like it. We have no restraint on our lips, so we say what we please, when we please.

James is simply stating that we need to be careful what we say. We can’t just say what we think all the time and have no control over what comes out of our mouth.

We’re told that we need to bridle our tongue. But what does that mean?

A bridle is a headgear that a horse wears and is governed by. To bridle something means to restrain it, to have control over it.

We have to take full responsibility for our words. We need to govern or restrain our tongue, so that we just don’t say what we feel. Don’t allow it to get us caught up in gossip, trash talking, vulgarity or negative talk. We need to be slow to speak and quick to listen.

James 1:19 (NKJV) 19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath…

Have we ever said something, and then later on said, “oh boy, I wish I had never said that.”?

We can’t take back our words once they are said. Words are powerful and can do a lot of damage, or they can do a lot of good!

Proverbs 15:4 (NKJV) 4 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, But perverseness in it breaks the spirit.

Let’s be careful what comes out of our mouths. We don’t want to cause destruction with our words. We want to be edifying, uplifting and encouraging with our words.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-25-18

Philippians 4:8 (NKJV) 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

When our attitude has been tainted from things that have been said and done to us, how do we bring ourselves to meditate on these things?

Sometimes we just want to let loose, say what we want to say, tell everyone exactly what we’re thinking, and move on.

We may think this will bring us great satisfaction. But, I have experienced that the aftereffect of this kind of behavior is worse when we realize that what we just did or said disappointed our Father in Heaven.

It’s not worth it to let loose and throw away what God taught us; to pull back and wait on Him.

There is a person that frequently tries to catch me off guard. There is a particular subject that we should not discuss when we are together. Why? Because we disagree.

But, every so often they will bring it up, hoping I will change my opinion. It usually causes tension and hurt feelings. So, I have learned to simply let them say what they want and then not respond to it.

It is the hardest thing to do. I love this person dearly and don’t want any hard feelings between us. But there are times when they just don’t know when to stop.  Can anyone relate?

They know where I stand regarding this particular subject. I can’t and won’t force them to agree with me. And they should not do the same to me.

This verse is a good one to hold onto to. It will help us to remain strong in God in those tension-filled moments.

If we feel like we are going to let loose on someone, and we know it’s not going to be good, take this verse and run to a place where we can get quiet for just a few minutes and gain control.

Direct our focus onto that which is true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, of virtue, and praiseworthy. Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-7-18

Proverbs 16:24 (NKJV) 24 Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, Sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.

Our mouths speak many, many words on a daily basis. What comes out of them is driven by what’s in our hearts. And what’s in our hearts is based on where we’re at in our walk with God.

Obviously, not a single one of us is perfect, even if we wish that we were. We will have good days and bad days, good hours and bad hours, and even good moments and bad moments.

But as a whole, it’s important that we allow God to mold us and shape us so that when we speak, the words that leave our mouths are pleasing to Him. If they’re pleasing to Him, they will be the best words that could be spoken.

This doesn’t mean that we should never say things that might offend someone. Sometimes the truth offends those who need to hear it. But it’s not due to the way it’s said. It’s due to fact that it’s said, because it contains truth.

Jesus spoke words that offended many simply because He addressed things that needed to be addressed and confronted people who needed to be confronted. The important part, though, is that He spoke things with love, not with a haughty or judgmental attitude.

So should our words be spoken, pleasant like honeycomb, albeit through the somewhat tainted heart of a less-than-perfect human being, but ultimately giving sweetness to the soul and health to the bones. Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 7-23-18

Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV) 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

This is wonderful to know. Time and time again I have to remind myself to have the right attitude.

One recent day I was waiting in line to park my car. The person in the car ahead of me was taking forever. They were talking away with the parking attendant. Then when they got around to paying, it didn’t stop there. They continued to sit there and talk more.

I waited and waited. I could feel my blood pressure rising. I thought of many unholy things I could do. Can you relate?

As I sat there, I decided that when it was my turn to drive through, I would not say a word. I was afraid I would say something out of anger and wish I had just kept my mouth shut.

My turn came and he scanned my parking pass. And on my way through, the gentleman said in a nice calm voice, “have a nice day”. My lips were sealed, just as I had planned.

I immediately felt the conviction, but quickly tried to justify my actions.

As the day went by, I kept being reminded of what took place earlier that morning.

Finally, I said, “Lord what is it?”. He reminded me of what I did. I said, “Lord, the reason I didn’t open my mouth and say anything was because I didn’t want to say anything that I would regret. So, I just didn’t say anything at all”.

He didn’t say much, but I knew He wasn’t buying my excuse.

As time went by that day, I finally admitted that I was in the wrong. As much as I wanted to think I did the right thing, I really didn’t handle myself like an ambassador of Christ.

I said to the Lord, “I’m sorry, and on my way out, I will do my best to make up for the wrong that I did”.

As I left the parking lot, the same people were still in the booth and I was able to make things right.

The tongue is powerful when it speaks, and even when it doesn’t speak. Make sure that the fruit that comes from it isn’t rotten, but good tasting! Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 4-19-18

Matthew 15:10-11 (NKJV) 10 When He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear and understand: 11 Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”

It’s crucial that we pay attention to the words we speak. We must watch our mouths if we want to get ahead in life.

We are not children. We are adults. We can’t be saying things that are not good; gossip, slander, lies, foul language and negativity. It will hurt us and set us back in many ways.

Our motion with God should always be focusing on moving forward. We should not be setting ourselves back, especially with our own tongue.

If we are wondering today why we are not moving forward, we may need to take a good look at the words we speak.

What are we saying that could be defiling us? Check ourselves today and make sure our language is clean. And if it isn’t, let’s ask God to help us clean up our talk.

We will see change and forward motion only when we begin speaking words that are pleasing to God.

Bible Verse of The Day – 6-27-17

Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV) 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

If we are not careful, we can destroy the words or the seeds that God sows through us into someone’s life. How do we do that? By speaking negatively about it after the fact.

God uses our voice at times to say things to people, to help them in the place that they are in. If it doesn’t turn out the way we hoped it would we may very easily begin to talk about it in a negative way.  By doing so we can destroy that seed before it even has a chance to take root.

That is exactly what the enemy wants.

John 10:10 (NKJV) 10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

How does the enemy bring destruction?

He does it in many ways. Sometimes he will use our very own words and our thoughts toward a situation or a person.

We need to choose our words carefully and not undo what God is doing with negative talk afterwards.

May our talk be with excellence, building and encouraging one another, that we may have victory!

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NKJV) 11 Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-29-16

Ephesians 4:29 (NKJV) 29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

This is a good challenge for us each day; Watching our words and what comes out of our mouths.

Depending on what we are caught up in talking about or what we might be going through, sometimes words just want to come flying out of our mouth. It’s natural. We feel like saying something and so we say it.

The worst time to speak is when we are mad, upset or hurt. Maybe we think that by letting out how we feel, and having no restraints on our mouths, that somehow we will feel better on the inside. Wrong!

The flesh loves to scream and yell when it’s mad. It loves to rebel and say things that we shouldn’t be saying simply because it’s mad and angry at everything and everyone.

But here’s the truth in a nutshell; It’s not going to make anything or anyone feel better by speaking corrupt words. If anything, it will add negativity to the mess, the situation will become worse and we will feel awful afterwards.

So what do we do?

Colossians 3:8 (NKJV) 8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.

We need to pull back and choose our words and actions carefully when we are upset, angry, or going through a hard time. Even in those moments we can have control over our words. We can stop in the middle of what we are doing, at any point in time, and do what is right and speak good things… words of edification.

James 1:19 (NKJV) 19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

So when we are feeling like just blurting out whatever we want, because of anger or frustration, we need to be quick to listen to what God’s Spirit is speaking on the inside of us.

We guarantee you that if we truly want to know what God is saying, He is there speaking. We just need to listen and obey.

He will show us how to turn the topic around and say something good, something uplifting and edifying. And it will change the direction of the conversation and the situation for the better.
