Matthew 5:13 (NKJV) 13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
When we are performing duties in the world, such as our job, or attending school, it’s important that we don’t let the world influence us and cause us to become like them.
Romans 12:2 (NKJV) 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
When we’re around certain types of behavior it can sometimes “rub off” on us if we’re not careful.
One example of this is the language that people use. Vulgar language runs rampant today. And, sadly, it’s not uncommon to hear believers using the very same curse words that the rest of the world uses. It should never be this way.
Some people might say that “they’re just words”. But God’s word says otherwise.
Colossians 3:8 (NKJV) 8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.
On the contrary, we are to be a light to the world.
Matthew 5:14 (NKJV) 14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
If we are letting the world’s behavior influence us, then we are no longer light to them. But, rather, we have become darkened by the world.
Jesus said we are the salt of the earth. What did He mean by that?
Well, salt gives things flavor. It adds to it. It enhances it.
But if we let the world dilute us, and we lose our “saltiness”, then we are of no use to those in the world. We become just like them and have nothing to offer them. In fact, Jesus said that salt that has lost its flavor is good for nothing!
So we want to encourage everyone today to be mindful of the words we use. We just never know who is listening and how what we say, or don’t say, will impact them.
