Matthew 12:43-45 (NKJV) 43 “When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. 44 Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. 45 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.”
This is an often-overlooked truth that costs a lot of people a large amount of unnecessary misery.
Getting free from evil spirits is something that we all need to have a better understanding of. Otherwise, we remain weak and feeble when it comes to getting free, and helping others get free.
What Jesus was speaking about in the verses above is critical to helping people stay free once they have received their deliverance.
When a person breaks free from any kind of spiritual bondage, the unclean spirit will leave and wander about, looking for a new place to dwell.
At some point, they will almost always return to where they were evicted from, to see if maybe they can enter in again. So, it’s important that we don’t fall for its attempts to come back in. Because if we do, it will also bring others with it. And the results will be worse than before.
From my own personal experience, I can verify that this is 100% true. When I was delivered from asthma, I was also set free from the constant use of an inhaler. That little inhaler had become my “pet”. I took it everywhere with me. I was in bondage to it.
In the days following my deliverance, I began to experience symptoms of an asthma attack again. I never actually had an attack. But the symptoms that would normally lead up to an attack began to show themselves.
My first instinct was to reach for my inhaler. But, instead, I got counsel from my pastors at that time. They recommended that I not use it. So, I followed their counsel (somewhat hesitantly, I have to admit). And I’m so glad I did!
After a few days of ignoring those nagging symptoms, and resisting the urge to use my inhaler, the symptoms completely disappeared forever.
It was only afterward that I understood what was going on. The spirit of infirmity that had been calling me its home was attempting to regain entry. Had I grabbed my inhaler and used it, I would have been admitting that my healing and deliverance was no longer valid.
And, by doing so, I would have opened the door wide for it to come back again. It would have been like rolling out the welcome mat for it.
But, because I resisted, the door stayed shut and it had to look elsewhere to find a new home. 17+ years later I am still 100% free of asthma and I plan on staying that way, by God’s power!
If you’ve been delivered from an addiction, or some other kind of spiritual bondage, be sure to let God help you to be strong, even in those initial days after being set free. Do whatever is necessary to resist the urge to return to old habits.
Those first few days afterward are critical and will set the course for the rest of our lives.
