Bible Verse of The Day – 5-25-24

Ephesians 4:29 (NKJV) 29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

The hardest thing for us to tame is our tongue.

That’s right! It wants to say what it feels like saying. It is unruly and full of poison.

James 3:8 (NKJV) 8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

We can grieve the Holy Spirit at times by what we say.

Choosing our words carefully is part of maturing as a child of God.

Not everything we want to say is OK for us to speak. If we let the Holy Spirit temper our words, we will find most times we won’t say half of what we were considering saying.

And once words have formed in our minds and are about to leave our mouths, it’s very hard to change direction mid-course.

I’ve learned that corruptible words aren’t necessarily just vulgar language. They are also unnecessary words spoken in an effort to be funny or in gossiping.

The Bible sometimes refers to this as idle talk; carnal conversation bearing no fruit.

Any words that aren’t good, edifying, or imparting grace to the hearer can be considered unnecessary words.

If we want to have a meaningful conversation, we need to be aware of the Holy Spirit living in us and how He will guide us in our talk.

Why? Because words are powerful.

Remember these words: If we have nothing good to say, don’t say anything at all.

Following that simple principle will go along way toward keeping us out of trouble!

James 1:19 (NKJV) 19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

Bible Verse of The Day – 5-16-19

Job 6:24 (NKJV) 24 “Teach me, and I will hold my tongue; Cause me to understand wherein I have erred.

Our words are powerful, whether we say good or bad things. They can bring pain, sorrow and confusion, or they can encourage, enlighten, and lift up.

We have to make an honest effort ahead of time to want to say and do the right things with our words. It’s not an easy task, and we can say something in a split second that we may regret.

Psalm 39:1 (NKJV) 1 I said, “I will guard my ways, Lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle, While the wicked are before me.”

We all know how easy it is to spew out things when we are caught off guard. You can actually feel the anger rising when we have been slapped with harsh, rude or disrespectful words. It’s not easy to hold back.

Psalm 39:3 (NKJV) 3 My heart was hot within me; While I was musing, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue:

But making an effort and reassuring ourselves to say and do the right thing in the heat of the moment will help when we face such things.

The rest we need to leave up to the Holy Spirit to give us the strength and wisdom to reply back with a good and positive reaction.

As we speak with our words according to the way we should, our emotions will follow along. Words can make or break someone, and we will feel better if we are on the “making” end of the stick.

So how can we “make” someone today? Get ready to use our mouths as a powerful instrument and change the world, one word at a time.

Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV) 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

Focus on making, not breaking. Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 11-2-18

James 1:2 (NKJV) 26 If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.

The word “think” in this verse is very important!

We think we are religious, but then we open our mouth every time we feel like it. We have no restraint on our lips, so we say what we please, when we please.

James is simply stating that we need to be careful what we say. We can’t just say what we think all the time and have no control over what comes out of our mouth.

We’re told that we need to bridle our tongue. But what does that mean?

A bridle is a headgear that a horse wears and is governed by. To bridle something means to restrain it, to have control over it.

We have to take full responsibility for our words. We need to govern or restrain our tongue, so that we just don’t say what we feel. Don’t allow it to get us caught up in gossip, trash talking, vulgarity or negative talk. We need to be slow to speak and quick to listen.

James 1:19 (NKJV) 19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath…

Have we ever said something, and then later on said, “oh boy, I wish I had never said that.”?

We can’t take back our words once they are said. Words are powerful and can do a lot of damage, or they can do a lot of good!

Proverbs 15:4 (NKJV) 4 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, But perverseness in it breaks the spirit.

Let’s be careful what comes out of our mouths. We don’t want to cause destruction with our words. We want to be edifying, uplifting and encouraging with our words.

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-7-18

Psalm 39:1 (NKJV) 39 I said, “I will guard my ways, Lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle, While the wicked are before me.”

This is surely something that we all need to be reminded of from time to time.

The tongue; It’s one of the smallest parts of the body, but yet very powerful and it can be very damaging.

We have to really try hard to keep it muzzled or quiet at times. I find that in situations where I want to defend myself, it is in those moments that I hear God say, “hold it. Don’t say a word”.

But, the thing to remember in those moments is that, most times, saying nothing may actually be saying a lot.

It truly takes discipline to pull back and restrain ourselves.

We think it would be better to just speak up and bring correction. But God knows better. And there are going to be times when we just need to muzzle it.

Let God’s spirit guide us. His ways are perfect.

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-3-15

James 1:19-20 (NKJV) 19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; 20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

Anger and words don’t go well together.

The things we speak when we’re angry can be very hurtful, and even downright damaging.

The thing about words that we need to understand is that they can never, ever be taken back once they leave our mouths.

We can apologize for something we’ve said. We can ask that person we spoke against to forgive us, and they can forgive us. But none of that will ever change the hurt that we cause by speaking hastily or in anger.

It’s important that we choose our words very wisely when we speak. We need to let the Holy Spirit be our filter. He will never let us speak words that are hurtful or damaging.

If we are in a heated discussion, the best thing we can do is pull back and cool off. Then, when things have settled down a bit, continue the conversation.

We need to remember that our words have extreme power. They can cut or they can heal. They can lift up or they can tear down. They can bring life or bring death.

Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV) 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

So let’s ask God to teach us how to guard our tongues and temper them so that the words we speak will bring love and life, not bitterness, hurt and death.

Amen.
