(James 4:13-14 NKJV) Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; {14} whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.
I know we have touched on this subject and these scriptures before, but they are always worth repeating, even if just as a gentle reminder for each of us.
Yesterday there was a horrible car accident not too far from where we live. In this accident, which involved two cars, two people lost their lives. One was an innocent driver, a man 68 years of age, who appears to have gotten hit by the other driver. The driver of the other car was the father of a 7 year old boy. The boy is now fatherless and the wife of the other man is now a widow.
It has become almost cliché to talk about how fragile life is and how short it is. But I am here to tell you today that it is the absolute truth. Not a single one of us is guaranteed a tomorrow.
We all tend to plan our lives and look so far ahead that we lose track of today… the right here and right now. We put off things that we should be doing, because we think we can do them tomorrow, or next week or next month.
Tragedies like these tend to be reminders for each of us as to the fragility of life, but we need to remember this every single day, even without seeing a tragedy.
I ask each of you today to work hard to keep your priorities straight and be sure to love those around you, giving them the time they deserve. We are all guilty of not calling that person when we should, or giving that someone a hug when we should.
Today, love like you mean it.
