Bible Verse of The Day – 10-5-23

Matthew 10:7-8 (NKJV) 7 And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.

As Jesus prepared the disciples for His departure, He began to teach them about what would transpire.

While He did not give them specific details as to how it would all play out, He assured them that that God would equip them by giving them the Holy Spirit; their Helper.

We need to take a closer look at what Jesus meant when He referred to the Holy Spirit as the Helper.

The most obvious reason for calling Him such was that He would in fact help them, in more ways than they could even comprehend at that moment.

Just as importantly, He would bring them comfort.

The Greek word used for Helper in John 14:26, which we quoted at the opening of yesterday’s devotional, was Parakletos.

Parakletos literally means comforter. So, not only is the Holy Spirit our Helper, but He is also our Comforter.

He empowers, He reminds, He guides, He comforts.

This is no small matter.

As believers, it is vital that we understand the Holy Spirit’s importance in our lives.

He was not just sent to empower and help the original disciples, nor just the twelve apostles. He was sent for all believers, to help us, comfort us, empower us, and guide us.

That means you and me. He was sent for every true believer.

As believers, it is utterly impossible for us to live fruitful lives without the power of the Holy Spirit.

Anything less is merely human intellect (head knowledge), trying to walk out what the Bible teaches based on our own finite understanding and feeble human strength, which falls far short of what God desires for us.

We have been commissioned to live lives of power and significance. Doing so based on our own capabilities is impossible. It cannot be done.

But with the Holy Spirit, we can do everything that God has called us to do. And we can do it to the fullest.

Why?

Because the Holy Spirit empowers us. He gives us the power needed to glorify God in ways that human flesh cannot do.

Tomorrow let’s talk about that power.

Bible Verse of The Day – 10-4-23

John 14:26 (NKJV) 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

Now that we have firmly established (in yesterday’s devotional) the Holy Spirit’s presence in the Old Testament, let’s move ahead and dig into His presence and His work in the New Testament.

One of the first undeniable appearances of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament was at the baptism of Jesus.

Luke 3:22 (NKJV) 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”

This verse is also a perfect example of the Trinity, where the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all present.

Looking back to the verse at the beginning of this devotional, we see that Jesus told the disciples that the Holy Spirit “will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you”.

This was critical for them.

It not only assured them that He (the Holy Spirit) would empower them for the difficult journey ahead, but that He would also give them everything they needed to write the various epistles that God had placed within them to write.

Those epistles would be collected and canonized into the New Testament that you and I rely so heavily on today. The revelation and understanding that can be gleaned from them is nothing short of miraculous.

They are truly God-breathed.

Jesus told the disciples of great feats that they and other believers would accomplish after His ascension to heaven. These were all made possible solely by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Here is what he said:

Mark 16:17 (NKJV) 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;

He was clearly preparing them for a work that would be unlike anything they had ever seen or ever believed could be accomplished through them.

And it would all be carried out by the power of the Holy Spirit, the Helper whom Jesus had promised would come.

This is starting to get interesting!

Be sure to come back tomorrow for more.

Bible Verse of The Day – 10-3-23

Genesis 1:2 (NKJV) 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Welcome back. Let’s forge ahead and learn more about the Holy Spirit!

While the word, “hovering”, usually implies something holding a fixed position in mid-air, without any horizontal or vertical movement, the connotation in the verse immediately above is that He was sweeping or moving rather than staying stationary.

Some might describe the Holy Spirit as like the “executive arm” of the Trinity. The Father speaks and the Holy Spirit is the Agent by Whom things happen to fulfill what the Father has spoken.

So, during the creation process, the Holy Spirit was busy, to say the least.

Think of the Holy Spirit as the conduit through which creation took place!

Jesus (the Son) was also present and active in the creation process, as noted in several scriptures throughout the Bible. This creates a beautiful picture of the Trinity working in perfect unity.

John 1:1-3 (NKJV) 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

That scripture alone proves the presence of Jesus at the beginning, playing an equal role in the creation of all that we see, because Jesus is referred to as “the Word” in several places in the word of God.

Again, we see the unity of the Trinity in full operation.

In the Old Testament, there are three instances of the phrase, “Holy Spirit”.

The prophet Joel specifically mentioned God’s Spirit in a well-known Old Testament prophecy.

Joel 2:28 (NKJV) 28 “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions.

In the book of Numbers (11:17), God spoke with Moses and told him that He would “take of the Spirit that is upon you” and “put the same upon” the seventy elders who were chosen to help Moses lead the people of Israel.

And look at what happened when the Holy Spirit was placed upon those seventy elders. They prophesied!

Numbers 11:25 (NKJV) 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was upon him, and placed the same upon the seventy elders; and it happened, when the Spirit rested upon them, that they prophesied, although they never did so again.

We are beginning to see a common thread when it comes to the presence of the Holy Spirit; good and powerful things happen.

We will continue with more tomorrow. See you then.

Bible Verse of The Day – 10-2-23

John 14:16-17 (NKJV) 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

The Holy Spirit.

Who is He?

What is His purpose?

What does He mean to us, and what is His role in our relationship with God?

First, we need to clarify the critically important, often overlooked fact that the Holy Spirit is He, not it. We should always refer to the Holy Spirit as He, not as a thing or an object.

He is the third person in the Trinity (triune God, the Godhead); the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

With that said, let us move on!

The Holy Spirit has always been present as part of the Godhead.

Despite not being as frequently mentioned in the Old Testament as in the New Testament, His presence was still critically important. And His activity was seen in more ways than most people realize even though He was not specifically mentioned by name.

In Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created”, in the the original Hebrew texts, the word used for God was “Elohim” (אֱלֹהִים).

Elohim is a uni-plural noun, indicating plural persons functioning as one. This is another clear indication of the presence of all three members of the Godhead in the beginning, including the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

He was there in the beginning, and He was a major part of the creation process.

Everything in this message so far has been written to give proof of the presence of the Holy Spirit since the beginning.

It is critical for us to understand this if we are to fully understand and appreciate His function and His operation as a whole and in our lives as individuals.

His power is more than we can comprehend or understand with our finite minds.

With this foundation laid, we will discuss this more tomorrow.

We hope you will join us.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-30-23

Isaiah 26:9 (NKJV) 9 With my soul I have desired You in the night, Yes, by my spirit within me I will seek You early; For when Your judgments are in the earth, The inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

I like how he says he desires the Lord at night.

In the night it is very still. There are not a lot of other things pulling on our thoughts, and we can really focus.

This goes right along with seeking the Lord early in the morning, which is another time of the day when we are “still and peaceful” in our hearts and minds.

If you have ever gotten up before the birds or the other early-rising animals, you will understand how quiet it is.

Some of my most precious times with God have been early in the morning or the middle of the night. I get much revelation at those times.

It is in those hours that we can give Him our full, undivided attention. We can focus and get direction, answers, and be comforted by His Spirit in those areas that are troubling us.

Jesus got up early, before anything else was happening, and He went to a place where He was completely alone. And He prayed.

Mark 1:35 (NKJV) 35 Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.

Desire Him in the night hour when we have unwound from all our activities, and seek Him in the early morning. He will meet us there. Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-29-23

John 15:18-19 (NKJV) 18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

Men and women of God have not been very well liked over the centuries.

That is not something that makes us feel particularly good, but it is a truth we must embrace.

Jesus warned us that if we are His followers, we would be hated by the world.

But look at what else Jesus said.

John 15:9-10 (NKJV) 9 “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. 10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.

As the Father loved Him (Jesus), He also loves us.

Jesus instructs that we must abide in His love.

What does that mean?

He goes on to tell us that if we keep His commandments, we are abiding in His love.

What commandment is He referring to?

John 15:12 (NKJV) 12 This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

We must love one another.

The love of God overrides any hatred that the world can dish out. His love is more powerful than any worldly force, and we must remember that.

As we learn to walk in love for one another, God’s love will overflow in us and onto others.

And what is the result of this?

His joy will be full in us!

John 15:11 (NKJV) 11 “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.

Jesus did not speak of the world’s hatred toward us to scare or discourage us.

He wanted us to be warned and fully equipped, ready to handle whatever might come our way.

And these warnings do just that; prepare us and equip us.

Let us move forward, learning to walk in His love, that our joy may be full.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-28-23

Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV) 6 Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.

Many children struggle in school these days because of the leadership the schools are operating under. The atmosphere in schools is heavy because of things that are allowed to go on.

Years ago, you went to school and learned. It was vastly different than it is today.

When you went to Sunday school, you came home singing, “I’m in the Lord’s Army, Yes sir!”.

Today, many schools (and even some churches) are now advising our children on matters that are better left to the parents, telling them who they are or who they can be.

They are teaching them many things that bring confusion with regard to gender, sexuality, etc.

Some schools are allowing children to create their own unique identity, apart from the name they were given by their parents.

Children are allowed to act out as various kinds of animals, allowing them to believe that they actually are that animal.

Boys can use the girls’ bathroom. Girls can use the boys’ bathroom.

Godly parents, if this is not a sign to rise-up and help our children, if this is not our door to walk through and speak out, letting the truth be heard, then I don’t know what is.

Kids today are being filled with garbage from the enemy, and it is messing them up. They don’t know who to believe; Mom, Dad, Teachers, Guidance Counselors, etc.

If we need to make adjustments, we must be prayerful about it and do whatever the Lord leads us to do to keep our child safe.

Speak up. Pull them out of school if you must, and teach them at home if that’s what it takes. Whatever we need to do, do it now. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

The children today are victims of the enemy’s schemes being carried out in public schools.

They are destroying them right under our noses, whether we realize it or not, in an effort to cripple the next generation.

Yes; little children today, soldiers tomorrow.

Whose army will they march in?

We are praying for them to all be marching in the “Lord’s Army”. Yes sir!

Let us be courageous and bold, willing to take whatever action is necessary to protect them

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-27-23

John 14:6 (NKJV) 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

John 14:6 is among my favorite Bible verses.

Years ago, when I used to work in a wallpaper manufacturing plant, I would make a large rectangle out of tape on the front of my locker. That brown tape was a perfect place to write something with a black marker.

So, I used it as a type of “billboard” where I would share a scripture for anyone who cared to read it as they walked by.

John 14:6 was the verse that I had up there for the longest time.

I like it because it states emphatically that Jesus is the ONLY way to the Father. It is forthright in this declaration, with no wavering or room for other possibilities.

I am the Way.

This truth has slowly been chipped away at by false teachings and by the effects of secular society.

Their efforts to negate or change this truth cannot make the truth go away. Nor can they actually change it.

What they can do is change people’s perception of that truth, attempting to weaken it and cause people to doubt its legitimacy.

This is an age-old trick of the enemy that dates all the way back to Eve in the garden of Eden.

The enemy taunted Eve, “Has God indeed said?”, causing her to question what she had been instructed to do by God Himself.

We must be sure not to let that same enemy break our resolve and cause us to doubt what God has said.

Jesus stated plainly that He is the only way to the Father.

Any other claim is false; a deception of the enemy. And we need to treat it as such, exposing it as a lie and then separating ourselves from it.

So, as the world propagates its deceptive lies and tells us that Jesus can’t possibly be the only way, we must remember the truth. And we should hold fast to that truth with certainty, never giving doubt a place in our minds.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-26-23

Isaiah 26:3 (NKJV) 3 You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.

Those minds or thoughts, creative imaginations, plans and ideas that are firmly founded on Jesus Christ, will be in such perfect peace.

We can have ideas of our own and then we can have His plan. The plan that was made just for us. Which will we choose?

Ours or His?

If we chose our plan and trust in our means. That’s what we will have. If we chose to walk with Him and hold on dearly to His ways and make it our way of life that trust is like no other. It is deeply engraved.

When we get in deep with Him, we don’t ever want to go back to the way things were. We may get scared at times, and might think we want to go back, but when we come right down to it, most times, we will continue to push forward in His plan. And be grateful later for doing it the way He says to.

Perfect peace is found when we are where we should be and all we want is to stay on that road with Him. We’re not chasing hype. We’re not chasing things that make us feel good about ourselves. We’re not riding the wave that everyone else is on.

We choose peace, we let it guide us by trusting Him with whatever comes our way.

Philippians 4:7 (NKJV) 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-25-23

Jeremiah 17:14 (NKJV) 14 Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; Save me, and I shall be saved, For You are my praise.

As a prophet of God, Jeremiah faced many struggles and trials. He was heavily persecuted for his obedience to God’s voice as he shared the words that God gave him to speak.

Because of these heavy persecutions, Jeremiah often expressed his concerns to God regarding his safety and wellbeing.

This resulted in Jeremiah being dubbed “the weeping prophet” by some.

Through all the trials and persecution, though, Jeremiah never wavered in his faith or his trust in God.

His absolute trust was readily expressed in the prayer above, as Jeremiah earnestly asked God to deliver him from those who persecuted and tormented him.

And even during the troubles that befell him because of his prophecies, he never ceased speaking the word of God to those whom God directed him to speak it.

He never shrunk back.

He was a notable example that you and I can look to as we walk through our own times of persecution or trials.

When things are easy for us, trusting God and following Him are effortless. But how will we react when seasons of persecution hit, or we face a difficult trial?

These are the times we need to understand and recognize God’s sovereignty.

It is His sovereignty that should give us hope and show us that our trust in Him is well placed.

Fear not, brothers and sisters in Christ!

Our trust in Him is not misplaced. He will walk us through whatever we face if we allow Him to.

And it is in Him that we will find our strength, our solace, and our joy as we move, one step at a time, toward victory.
