Romans 6:1-2 (NKJV) 1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
Over the last several years, I have noticed something that I would call a disconnect in the body of Christ; a disconnect between some Christians and what the word of God says about the words we choose to speak.
This is not about whether we speak joyful things or negative things. It’s about certain types of words that I hear people who profess to be Christians using on a repeated basis; cuss words.
For some reason, many Christians fail to understand that God doesn’t want us to be using this kind of language. It is something that we should be leaving behind, as part of our past; our old life before Christ.
This scripture states plainly that we should not be using “filthy language.
Colossians 3:8 (NKJV) 8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.
This next scripture states that we should avoid “coarse jesting”; dirty jokes and similar talk.
Ephesians 5:4 (NKJV) 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.
The problem seems to stem from a failure to allow God to change us completely.
When we give ourselves to Christ, we need to surrender to Him completely, letting Him change us from the inside, out, leaving no area of our lives untouched.
We need to let the Holy Spirit convict us, even in areas where we resist change.
This kind of language is part of the world, not part of the kingdom of God. And God’s word says we are to leave the world behind, separating ourselves form it.
2 Corinthians 6:17 (NKJV) 17 Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.”
We need to allow God to renew our minds, transforming the way we think and the way we act, helping us leave our sinful ways behind.
Romans 12:2 (NKJV) 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
This won’t happen overnight. But as we allow God to convict us, He will bring change to us a little at a time.
