Category: The Holy Spirit

Bible Verse of The Day – 10-3-23

Genesis 1:2 (NKJV) 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Welcome back. Let’s forge ahead and learn more about the Holy Spirit!

While the word, “hovering”, usually implies something holding a fixed position in mid-air, without any horizontal or vertical movement, the connotation in the verse immediately above is that He was sweeping or moving rather than staying stationary.

Some might describe the Holy Spirit as like the “executive arm” of the Trinity. The Father speaks and the Holy Spirit is the Agent by Whom things happen to fulfill what the Father has spoken.

So, during the creation process, the Holy Spirit was busy, to say the least.

Think of the Holy Spirit as the conduit through which creation took place!

Jesus (the Son) was also present and active in the creation process, as noted in several scriptures throughout the Bible. This creates a beautiful picture of the Trinity working in perfect unity.

John 1:1-3 (NKJV) 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

That scripture alone proves the presence of Jesus at the beginning, playing an equal role in the creation of all that we see, because Jesus is referred to as “the Word” in several places in the word of God.

Again, we see the unity of the Trinity in full operation.

In the Old Testament, there are three instances of the phrase, “Holy Spirit”.

The prophet Joel specifically mentioned God’s Spirit in a well-known Old Testament prophecy.

Joel 2:28 (NKJV) 28 “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions.

In the book of Numbers (11:17), God spoke with Moses and told him that He would “take of the Spirit that is upon you” and “put the same upon” the seventy elders who were chosen to help Moses lead the people of Israel.

And look at what happened when the Holy Spirit was placed upon those seventy elders. They prophesied!

Numbers 11:25 (NKJV) 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was upon him, and placed the same upon the seventy elders; and it happened, when the Spirit rested upon them, that they prophesied, although they never did so again.

We are beginning to see a common thread when it comes to the presence of the Holy Spirit; good and powerful things happen.

We will continue with more tomorrow. See you then.

Bible Verse of The Day – 10-2-23

John 14:16-17 (NKJV) 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

The Holy Spirit.

Who is He?

What is His purpose?

What does He mean to us, and what is His role in our relationship with God?

First, we need to clarify the critically important, often overlooked fact that the Holy Spirit is He, not it. We should always refer to the Holy Spirit as He, not as a thing or an object.

He is the third person in the Trinity (triune God, the Godhead); the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

With that said, let us move on!

The Holy Spirit has always been present as part of the Godhead.

Despite not being as frequently mentioned in the Old Testament as in the New Testament, His presence was still critically important. And His activity was seen in more ways than most people realize even though He was not specifically mentioned by name.

In Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created”, in the the original Hebrew texts, the word used for God was “Elohim” (אֱלֹהִים).

Elohim is a uni-plural noun, indicating plural persons functioning as one. This is another clear indication of the presence of all three members of the Godhead in the beginning, including the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

He was there in the beginning, and He was a major part of the creation process.

Everything in this message so far has been written to give proof of the presence of the Holy Spirit since the beginning.

It is critical for us to understand this if we are to fully understand and appreciate His function and His operation as a whole and in our lives as individuals.

His power is more than we can comprehend or understand with our finite minds.

With this foundation laid, we will discuss this more tomorrow.

We hope you will join us.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-8-23

1 Corinthians 6:19 (NKJV) 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

The verse above makes it clear that the Holy Spirit is indwelling in believers; He lives in us.

He does not follow us around, walk beside us or walk ahead of us. He dwells inside us.

Knowing this, we should also be aware of the implications this has for all of us; we are never out of His presence.

He is everywhere we go.

What does that mean for us?

Most will readily say that because He is always with us, He will protect us.

There is truth in this, but maybe not in the exact way most of us would like it to be.

Let me explain.

The Holy Spirit’s “job” is to lead us, guide us and help us. Nowhere are we told that He will control us.

On the contrary, we each have free will. We do what we choose to do. He will do everything possible to point us in the right direction, but we make the choice to obey or not.

And this is where it can get sticky for us.

If He leads and we obey, all is good. We are pleasing God.

If He leads and we choose to do something other than what He prompts us to do, we are stepping into territory where we are largely on our own. And this can get tricky since we are no longer following His lead.

From another perspective, think about what His indwelling presence means if we ignore His leading and step into something that we know is contrary to what God wants for us.

We are subjecting Him to whatever our choices lead us into.

He hears the conversations we have. He sees everything that we look at. He accompanies us everywhere we go. He hears everything that we listen to.

Do you see where this is going?

Conversations, movies, TV shows, music, social media posts; He sees and hears it all as we participate in whatever it might be we are doing.

This should cause us to choose carefully what we do, knowing that whatever we expose ourselves to we are also exposing Him to.

This is not a scare tactic. This is not to intimidate anyone.

But as we begin to understand some of these things, it brings clarity to our spirits and helps us make better decisions in everything we do, giving us accountability.

Remember the Holy Spirit, our Invisible Companion.

Bible Verse of The Day – 5-11-23

John 14:26 (NKJV) 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

I love that we have a Helper; our third person of Trinity, the Holy Spirit!

The Bible teaches us that the Godhead consists of three divine persons; Father, Son, Holy Spirit, each fully God and showing fully the divine nature.

The Holy Spirit inspired the scriptures, empowers God’s people, and convicts the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgement.

John 16:8 (NKJV) 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

He will be with us when we face trials. He will help us through the tough tests we face from time to time. He will be there for us when we grieve over the things and people we may lose here on earth.

He has been sent specifically to help us!

It’s truly up to us to make sure we have given Him the place to freely move in and through us.

How do we do this?

First, we must be born again. We must be believers.

The Holy Spirit needs a place to live. By repenting of our sins and believing in Jesus Christ as God’s only Son, it gives Him a dwelling place inside of us.

Second, ask Him to come, and believe that He will fill us. Be willing to surrender our body to Him as a living sacrifice.

Luke 11:13 (NKJV) 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

Third, be willing to obey the things the Holy Spirit leads us into. Not just once in a while or just in the things that are easy and convenient to do. But in always being ready to obey the Holy Spirit when He prompts us, even if we don’t feel like we can do what He is asking of us. Take the step toward it and let Him guide us through.

Fourth, open our mouths and speak the words the Holy Spirit gives to us. Pray in other tongues.

Acts 2:4 (NKJV) 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The utterance that the Holy Spirit gives to us in tongues is the direct language to our Heavenly Father. Don’t be afraid or judge it in any way. Trust Him!

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-24-23

1 Samuel 10:6 (NKJV) 6 Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.

The Holy Spirit is not just a New Testament phenomenon. He has been a part of everything that has taken place since the beginning of time.

He participated in creation. He has spoken to men through the generations. And He has been the changer of men’s hearts for all of time.

I’d like to share a little personal testimony today to demonstrate the power of the Holy Spirit when it comes to changing the hearts of men.

I put my faith in Christ when I was 18 years old. I knew nothing of God except a few tidbits that I had learned along the way through my childhood and teen years. And that didn’t add up to very much.

After I became a Christian, I began to change a little. But the progress was very slow.

I wasn’t really much different than the rest of the world.

But about 4 years later, something happened. And that event changed me drastically.

I began to grow at breakneck speed. My heart began to change. My mind began to be renewed and transformed.

The words out of my mouth began to change. My attitude changed. My actions changed. The ways of the world began to drop off me and I began to behave more like a child of God than a child of the evil one.

God was changing me right before my very own eyes and the eyes of Pastor Ellie.

But amid all this change, there is one event that stands out to me even now, almost 40 years later.

I threw most of my records away.

You see, I absolutely love music. And back in the day, I was a huge fan of many secular rock bands. I had a stack of records that was literally up to my knees or higher. Hundreds of albums.

And one day God put it on my heart to gather most of them up and throw them away, literally.

So, I went through them all. I stacked them up and put them in paper grocery bags. Then I took them to the landfill to dispose of them forever.

This season that I was in was a major turning point in my life where I began to take my walk with God seriously. And it showed outwardly in so many ways.

What was the cause of this drastic change?

The Holy Spirit (the Spirit of the Lord) had come upon me.

He changed my heart. He changed my desires. He changed just about everything about me.

And I never looked back.

Jesus saved me. He made me a new creation when He forgave me and redeemed me from my sins.

It was my encounter with the Holy Spirit, 4 years later, that caused me to break free from those things that still had a grip on me.

1 Samuel 10:9 (NKJV) 9 So it was, when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, that God gave him another heart; and all those signs came to pass that day.

Don’t ignore the power of the Holy Spirit. Let Him touch you. Let Him give you a new heart, that God may be able to bring “those signs” to pass in your life.

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-6-23

John 16:13 (NKJV) 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

Following the leading of the Holy Spirit has ramifications in every aspect of our lives.

He will teach us how to walk more closely with God, helping us build a stronger relationship with Him.

He will help us better understand the word of God, giving us deeper insights into who God is and who He wants us to be.

He will show us things in our lives that we would miss or not see if we were not listening and paying attention to Him.

Some of the things He will show us will be spiritual and related solely to our walk with God.

Other things He will show us will be relevant to the world we live in and the things going on around us.

Some of these things will not seem spiritual on the surface. They will seem like mere current events or something similar.

But if we allow Him to draw back the curtain, so to speak, and reveal the deeper things to us, we will see that everything we’re seeing in the natural is actually very deeply spiritual.

For every action we see in the natural, there are several unseen actions happening in the spiritual realm. Spiritual warfare is happening every second.

But without the help and discernment of the Spirit of God, we will be blind and oblivious to all of it, and we will often have no true understanding of what’s happening around us.

This is why it’s so critically important for us to learn to hear and heed God’s Spirit.

Even in our everyday lives, God will reveal things to us that will blow our minds if we allow Him to, revealing even things to come.

Father God, help us to submit to you and allow your Spirit to guide us into all truth. Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 1-7-23

Romans 8:13 (NKJV) 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Have you ever noticed how it is that God tells us to do what He wants us to do?

By the Spirit!

Not by flesh, not by intellect, not by human understanding, not by power or by might.

By His Spirit.

The verse above is a perfect example of that; by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body.

It is not by our own power or strength. Indeed, we cannot do anything by our own strength.

Anything accomplished by human strength is temporary at best. It will eventually fail.

The Holy Spirit’s presence and unhindered operation in our lives is critical and absolutely necessary. He is the fuel who gives us the fire we need to do great and mighty things for the kingdom of God.

And if we operate by the Holy Spirit, none of the things we accomplish will cause us to become proud or haughty. Every shred of glory and honor for them will be given to God.

It is by the Holy Spirt that we defeat the enemy in our personal lives.

We defeat addictions; alcohol, drugs, porn, sex and more.

We overcome our old self, leaving behind the things of this world; filthy language, gossip, adultery, drunkenness, fornication, stealing, lying.

And we live the kingdom life; loving others, forgiving those who hurt us, helping those in need, putting others before ourselves, giving of ourselves even when it hurts.

These are all things that we can’t do by our flesh.

We can do this only by the power of the Holy Spirit, by giving Him sovereignty over our lives.

Jesus said it best when He told us that we can do nothing without Him.

John 15:5 (NKJV) 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

Bible Verse of The Day – 1-5-23

Acts 8:14-16 (NKJV) 14 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

When the apostles heard that the Samaritans became Christians, they sent Peter and John to them. Why? Because as of yet He, the Holy Spirit “had fallen upon none of them”.

They had not yet received the baptism of the Holy Spirit; they were saved and were baptized with water.

Acts 8:12 (NKJV) 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.

It’s important that we notice there are two different, separate experiences. Water baptism, which the Samaritans had already experienced before Peter and John arrived, and then after they arrived, the baptism or “falling upon the believers” of the Holy Spirit, which was a whole other experience.

The falling upon of the Holy Spirit came after the apostles arrived and laid hands on them, not at the time that they initially believed.

Acts 8:17 (NKJV) 17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

The Samaritans received the Holy Spirit, and Simon watched it take place. He saw that there was power imparted into the new believers as the Holy Spirit fell upon them and he offered the apostles money if they would do the same for him.

He wanted it so he could use it for his own gain.

Acts 8:18 (NKJV) 18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money…

Well, we all know we can’t buy God’s gifts. But if we have a sincere heart to do the right thing, He will give to us freely.

It is the baptism of the Holy Spirit by which we receive the power to work out our Salvation with fear and trembling.

It is the power of the Holy Spirit “falling upon” us that helps us live as a believer in this world we live in today.

We need Him and His help each day, and without Him we will be powerless to carry out anything that He has asked us to do.

Philippians 2:12 (NKJV) 12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;

Ask Him to fall upon us today and guide our steps. Be strong in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Bible Verse of The Day – 12-27-22

John 14:26 (NKJV) 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

When the disciples had Christ with them, they learned how to do things. They learned His way, the right way.

After Christ was crucified, they needed to walk out what he taught them without Him beside them in person. But He didn’t leave them all alone. He had a Helper come and guide them through it all.

That Helper, the Holy Spirit, gave them a backbone to go on and do things they never thought they could do.

He gave them power and strength to be bold, and wisdom to know what to say at times.

They healed the sick and spread the gospel to the ends of the earth through the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 1:8 (NKJV) 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Change came to the disciples when Christ was not with them any longer. But He sent them the Holy Spirit, and through Him much was accomplished as they continued to push forward.

They grew and matured and followed through, doing what was needed to faithfully run the race that was set before them.

2 Timothy 4:7 (NKJV) 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

Christ has made a way for us to do whatever He puts in front of us.

Don’t get discouraged when things change. Listen and watch. The answer is there.

He has made it possible for us to face whatever comes our way while we do what is meant for us to do here on this earth.

Do what it takes. Stay faithful. Finish the race before you.
