Category: Taking Responsibility for Our Actions

Bible Verse of The Day – 5-8-19

Exodus 32:24 (NKJV) 24 And I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them break it off.’ So they gave it to me, and I cast it into the fire, and this calf came out.”

As Moses spent time on the mountain, speaking with God, Aaron stayed behind with the Israelites. As they waited for Moses to return, they grew impatient.

They began to make demands of Aaron. They no longer wanted to wait. And they quickly forgot God, despite the fact that He had led them out of slavery in Egypt.

As they pressed Aaron, he finally gave in to them and told them to give him all of their gold jewelry. Aaron melted the jewelry and crafted a gold calf, placing it before them so they could worship it.

Exodus 32:4 (NKJV) 4 And he received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf. Then they said, “This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!”

But did you notice what Aaron told Moses when he asked about the calf? He literally told Moses that “a calf came out”!

Aaron refused to accept responsibility for his poor choice. Instead, he played innocent, hoping he would not be held accountable for his behavior.

What do we do when we are faced with our poor choices and mistakes? Do we pass the blame, or do we own up and accept responsibility for what we’ve done?

It’s important that we own up to the things we do if we want to experience God’s forgiveness and mercy. After all, He can’t forgive us for something that we “didn’t do”.

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-23-19

Genesis 3:13 (NKJV) 13 And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

It’s important that when we have done something wrong, and we know it, we don’t try to pass the blame.

It doesn’t matter who tempted us. It doesn’t matter what the reason is that we did what we did.

If God was to say to us, “what have YOU done?”, it’s imperative that we own up to it, admit it and repent.

When we keep putting the blame on others, we don’t see what we need to see in ourselves. And we will never change what is needed to be changed.

We don’t get fixed, we keep on doing what we do and then we wonder why we are in the state we are in.

You notice how God asked the woman, “What is this you have done?” He’s God. He knew already what she had done, and He even gave her a hint, by saying “YOU”. He gave her a chance to own up to it. Yes, there was temptation there, but she still did it.

Owning up to our error is the beginning of change for us. Who wants to get serious and change?

When God comes to us with the same question, “what is this you have done?”, pick up on the hint and spill the beans, so to speak. Don’t start by putting the blame on someone or something else. He already knows the story and is waiting for us to admit it.

There is something about saying it with our own mouths, hearing it with our own voice and owning it with our own hearts. That’s when God can begin to deal with the root of it.

Amen.
