Category: Surrendering to God

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-24-24

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV) 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

To be able to trust God, we must first surrender to Him.

How do we surrender to anyone or anything?

We comply with the way they want to do things. We submit or allow them to have authority. We agree to stop resisting them.

Surrendering to God is trusting Him even when we may not understand everything.

What is it today that God is asking us to surrender to Him?

Are we holding back, resisting and not allowing Him to have authority in a certain area of our lives?

I have realized that it not only hurts us to keep resisting Him, but it delays things that He wants to be able to do with us and through us.

We all go through this at different times in our walk. Let us stand today in agreement that together we wholly surrender that part of us that we continue to resist Him with. That He may be able to direct our path fully.

Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-19-24

Psalm 9:1 (NKJV) 1 I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works.

The phrase “whole heart” is one that I find intriguing.

It is not the phrase itself that catches my attention, but the connotations behind that phrase.

Our relationship with God will be as strong as what we put into it; our whole heart, or just a portion of it.

In the Psalm above, King David wrote that he would tell of God’s marvelous works with his whole heart; with everything in him.

David had a good grasp on the fact that this is what God asks of us; our whole heart.

As His children, it is what He asks of us as well. Not just that we would tell of Him with our whole heart, but that we would pursue and desire Him with our whole heart.

It is what He has asked for all along, and why the people of Israel were constantly in trouble, as they split their devotion to Him with idols and false gods.

This is a serious thing for us to understand. So serious, in fact, that in the book of Revelation we are told that if we give less than our whole heart (being lukewarm in our affections and dedication to Him), especially if we do so intentionally, we will be vomited out.

Revelation 3:16 (NKJV) 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.

We are living in a spiritual season of perpetual lukewarmness.

The world offers so many things that vie for our time, attention, and affection. It can be extremely easy to fall prey to this and lose the intensity that God asks for in our relationship with Him.

And if we are not careful, our heart begins to stray ever so slightly, creating a crack in the bond between us and God.

But God is faithful. He is patient and merciful. And if we recognize this lapse in our walk with Him, whether tiny or large, and we repent, He is more than willing to meet us where we are at, drawing us in with open arms.

Let us not be as the Israelites were; a stiff-necked people who suffered the wrath of God for their love of idols and false gods.

Bible Verse of The Day – 5-22-24

Luke 22:56-58 (NKJV) 56 And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, “This man was also with Him.” 57 But he denied Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.” 58 And after a little while another saw him and said, “You also are of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”

Peter’s failure at this point in his life is well known and is the topic of many discussions. He had denied knowing Jesus after spending the prior three years with Him.

Most of those discussions tend to focus on Peter’s transformation from a frightened denier of Jesus to a powerhouse Apostle who was instrumental in building the early church.

Without a doubt, there is much to be learned from this incredible turnaround in Peter’s life.

There is something else that we can learn from this that can be easily missed.

It is this; If Peter could be transformed so completely after such a drastic failure, God is also able to transform me or you in the same way.

In fact, He can do this with anyone.

How is this possible?

How can He take someone who is terrified, and transform them into someone who is willing to lay down their life for their faith?

We must surrender our lives to God and His Spirit.

This cannot be something we do halfheartedly. Total surrender on our part is required.

We should know that this could cost us.

But we must recognize that our salvation cost Jesus everything. He traded His life for ours. He gave us His all.

This is not a message for the faint of heart. It may make some quite uncomfortable.

But it is a truth that each of us needs to understand and weigh on a personal level.

Will we surrender all to Jesus? Will we allow God to transform us as He transformed Peter?

Will we commit to presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice for the service of God’s kingdom? Only we can answer that question.

Romans 12:1 (NKJV) 12 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-2-23

John 8:31-32 (NKJV) 31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

As a believer growth is essential, and it comes by us abiding in the word of God.

His word will touch our hearts and change us deeply if we accept it and act in accordance with what it says.

Jesus said that we are His disciples if we abide in His word.

Do we want to be disciples of Jesus Christ today?

If so, then we need to do as the Jesus taught, and abide in His word.

His word will bring conviction, correction and deliverance to our lives, helping us overcome our fleshly desires.

There is strength and wisdom that comes from the word of God. And as we learn of His truth, He will free us in every area of our lives as we allow Him to do so.

There’s a sticking point in all of this. What is it? Our flesh!

The flesh cannot please God. It has to submit to Him.

Romans 8:8 (NKJV) 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

We must teach our flesh to submit quickly to the word of God and heed His commandments. It must be in submission to Him at all times.

So, here is the question we all need to ponder on and give an answer to; Are we ready to be His disciples?

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-26-23

John 3:16 (NKJV) 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Our grandchildren came for a visit this week. They are 6 and 7 years old, a boy and a girl.

One day while we were in the car, we were having a conversation regarding heaven.

As we were talking about Jesus, one of them shouted out, “I believe in Jesus!”. It was like an echo as the other shouted immediately after, “I believe in Jesus too!”.

Can you imagine how I felt to hear such words coming out of the mouth of babes!?

I was silent for a moment, thinking, “aren’t they kind of young for this?”.

You know, sometimes we need to tell our flesh to sit down and be quiet. It likes to try and figure everything out.

I realized He meets us all where we are.

There is no perfect age, but a perfect moment.

It’s when we get it!

We believe in our hearts that Jesus is the Son of God, and He will forgive us and set us free.

Where are we today?

Have we put our faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? Do we understand and accept that He came and died on the cross for our sins?

If you do, just as my grandchildren did, shout it from the mountain tops, I believe in Jesus Christ!

Let Him set you free, for you will be free indeed!

John 8:36 (NKJV) 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Let us surrender ourselves completely to Him, allowing Him to help us in every area of our lives.

He will show us how to walk through every challenge we face.

He will heal our brokenness. He will give us wisdom. He will give us understanding in areas where we are lost. He will carry us when our body can’t take it anymore and our fight has diminished.

Praise God and shout it from the mountain tops. We believe in Jesus Christ! Hallelujah!

Bible Verse of The Day – 5-12-23

Matthew 11:28 (NKJV) 28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Jesus spoke in ways that most of the religious leaders of His time could not comprehend. They couldn’t understand the symbolic underpinnings of His teaching because their eyes were closed, and their ears were deaf.

Instead of listening, and trying to hear what he meant, they grew angry and ridiculed Him, eventually scheming to have Him killed.

The verse above is one of those that had deep symbolic meaning that many of the ordinary, everyday people understood deep in their spirits. And because they “got it”, they flocked to Him to be set free from the entanglements that they wrestled with in their personal lives.

Jesus wasn’t referring to people who were physically weary. He was calling out to those who were afflicted, not just physically, but spiritually and emotionally as well.

Jesus came to show us what true freedom is. He demonstrated right before their eyes the reality and the truth of freedom from things that oppress us, things that condemn us and things that can destroy us.

Many of you reading this know exactly what I’m referring to because we can all wrestle with things from time to time that grip us and make us feel like there is no hope for freedom in our lives.

Addiction, depression, sickness, unforgiveness, bitterness, jealousy, coveting, lust, and so many other things are struggles that can literally wreak havoc with our lives.

But there is no need for us to wrestle with these things for years on end, watching them destroy us a little at a time. Jesus came to set the captives free.

Luke 4:18 (NKJV) 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;

Now, I know that some people may get offended when they are told that “there is no need for us to wrestle with these things for years on end”. Others may bristle up and state bluntly that, “it’s not easy to overcome these kinds of things”.

To that I say, “surrender it to God. Let Him have it. Stop trying to do it by your own strength”.

It is in doing this that we finally find true freedom; freedom in Christ.

God does not arbitrarily swoop down and just take something from us. We must reach a point where we are willing to lay it at His feet and surrender to Him. We surrender everything.

Why? Because we come to the realization that we can’t win this battle on our own.

It’s in the surrendering where we find victory; the victory that we could not find for so long, as we struggled from one day to the next to find a way out of the box that we had been trapped in.

It was in the surrendering where the woman with the issue of blood found her healing after spending all she had on doctors for 12 years.

It was in the surrendering where Bartimaeus found his eyesight.

It was in the surrendering where Mary Magdalene found freedom from the demons that had held her captive and tormented her for so long.

And it is in the surrendering where you can find your freedom as well.

Stop trying to do it by your own strength. Stop trying to figure it out in your mind. Stop running from God.

Instead, run to Him! Lay whatever it is you’re wrestling with at His feet. Give it to Him and leave it there. It is no longer yours to carry.

And cry out, “Lord, have mercy on me”. Amen.

Luke 18:38 (NKJV) 38 And he cried out, saying, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

Bible Verse of The Day – 2-14-22

Psalm 116:1-2 (NLT) 1 I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. 2 Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!

Over the last few months, I have done a lot of pondering on the path that my life has taken.

I was not raised in a Christian home. My parents were not bad people. In fact, they were very good, honest people who taught us to work hard, love and respect others and not to expect to have anything handed to us. We were to work for what we wanted.

Things changed for me, though, when I met a girl who was just 16 years old. I was 18 at the time. This young woman gave me a gift that began to change my heart.

It was a men’s necklace with a cross hanging on it.

I wasn’t sure how to feel about it at first. I loved it because it was from her, and she had thought enough of me to give it to me. But the cross kind of caught me off guard at first.

I had no real understanding of Biblical things. I had a vague idea that God was out there somewhere, and I knew the story of Jesus, but that was pretty much the full extent of my Biblical knowledge.

But that cross hanging around my neck started to cause me to think. And my terrible habit of using the names of God and Christ as a cuss word began to change. It brought conviction to my heart; something I had never felt before.

Less than two years later, I had put my faith and trust in Christ. And I have no problem at all sharing with you how much I love my God and my Savior now.

He took me and cleaned me up. He made me a new creation. He created a new heart within me. And I’m thankful beyond words for that.

I’m also thankful for Pastor Ellie, the young woman who gave me that cross necklace. We got married on March 12 of 1983, and we never looked back.

God has taken us on a great adventure, and we know He’s not finished yet!

Never doubt God. Never underestimate His ability to bring change. And never overlook or discount what he can do in your heart.

All we need to do is surrender to Him.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV) 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Bible Verse of The Day – 2-26-21

1 Kings 18:39 (NKJV) 39 Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!”

Sometimes when God’s Spirit moves on us, we may get an overwhelming feeling that we just need to drop to the floor and lay flat on our face before Him.

That may sound weird to some people. But once we have seen and felt the presence of God, and the promptings of His Spirit, there is nothing at all that’s weird about it.

God is holy. He is sovereign. He is pure. And He is righteous.

Nobody can stand in His presence; not even His angels.

The word of God is full of examples of people falling on their faces when they came into His presence.

So, I write today to ask you this question; when was the last time we got on our faces before God?

When is the last time we actually surrendered to His Spirit and fell prostrate before Him?

Maybe you’re asking, “why should I feel the need to lay face down before God? What’s so important about this that requires me to do it?”.

Well, first off, it isn’t necessarily a requirement in a “regulatory” sense of the word.

But we need to understand that laying prostrate before God is a sign of surrender. It shows our willingness to acknowledge His sovereignty and His holiness, and bow before Him with no regard for ourselves, how we might look or how inconvenient it might be to fall before Him.

It is a humbling thing to encounter Him and fall face-first before Him. There is something unexplainable about it that words can’t sufficiently describe.

But suffice it to say that doing so is the beginning of bringing our relationship with Him to a new level of reverence and adoration. It changes us, from the inside, out.

So, we encourage you to pay attention to His promptings. Don’t be afraid to surrender and get on your face on the floor, or even on the ground if that’s where His presence falls upon you.

We promise you that it will be something you will never look at with the same eyes again.

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-5-19

Luke 22:41-42 (NKJV) 41 And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”

Jesus set the ultimate example here for us to follow.

No, not just in the fact He laid down His life.

Even though that is the most critical part of the big picture, the fact that He submitted to the Father and set His own will aside is what led Him to follow through and give His life for us.

Had he chosen to follow His own will, as He stated Himself when He asked if it would be possible to take “this cup” from Him, there would have been no crucifixion.

Regardless of what His flesh felt, Jesus did the Father’s will and died in your place and my place on that cross.

That is the example we all need to look at and follow each day, to the best of our ability, led by the Holy Spirit.

Our flesh is weak, but strong at the same time.

It is weak when it comes to surrendering to God. But it is strong when it comes to wanting its own way. It is a paradoxical tug of war constantly going on within us.

But, if we can grasp the fact that Jesus was 100% human then we can also begin to see and understand that we, too, need to learn how to submit our will to God, deferring to Him when we make our choices.

Sometimes this can be much easier than we might think. Other times it can be a very difficult thing, as it was for Jesus in the verses above, as our flesh rises up and does battle with our spirit.

As we grow in our relationship with God, though, it becomes much easier. And when those extremely difficult crossroads come along, we will be much more inclined to choose God’s will over ours.

Bible Verse of The Day – 6-27-19

Proverbs 19:20-21 (NKJV) 20 Listen to counsel and receive instruction, That you may be wise in your latter days. 21 There are many plans in a man’s heart, Nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand.

We all have our plans and goals for this life. It’s part of human nature.

The thing we need to learn is that when we become a child of God, through believing and trusting in His Son, Jesus Christ, those plans we have made may change.

We are not saying they absolutely will. But they may. And how will we ever know this?

We surrender to God the things that we had planned on doing and we let Him guide our steps as to what His plans are for us.

For example, we can pray and put it before Him.

Dear God in Heaven,

Now that I am Your child, I want to make sure that I am where You want me to be. Help me to live the life You have for me. I am ready to follow you. Show me the steps I need to take and help me to take them in faith, as I follow you. I will listen and try my best to obey.  Please, go before me and make any adjustments that need to be made. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Now, this doesn’t mean that we just stop working. And it doesn’t necessarily mean to change things up immediately.

We should keep on doing what we have been doing, but be alert in listening or watching for God’s leading. Sometimes when we start to walk like this, we may see changes come quickly and we may think of it as being something negative. But don’t quickly assume anything. Stay open, pay attention and be prayerful.

When we have been trying so hard to get somewhere, and it seems nothing is happening, or we are not getting any further ahead, we may need to press in and keep going.

But then there may be times when we need to take some time and ask God, “is there something else I need to be doing?”.

If the signs around us are speaking loud and clear that we need to change, don’t continue to do things our way. God may have something else and it is up to us to follow, listen, and receive instructions.

He knows what we need, where we belong and how to get there. Let Him take the weight off us by listening to His counsel.

Isaiah 46:4 (NKJV) 4 Even to your old age, I am He, And even to gray hairs I will carry you! I have made, and I will bear; Even I will carry, and will deliver you.
