Bible Verse of The Day – 7-27-17

2 Thessalonians 3:11 (NKJV) 11 For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies.

Busybodies are looked down upon in God’s word. They are never looked at favorably under any circumstances. It’s very clear that we are not to spend our time meddling in other people’s affairs.

But, despite what God’s word tells us, many of us still spend a lot of time doing just that… meddling in, or talking about, the lives and affairs of others.

It can happen very easily. Sometimes we might see something happen and then try to figure out why it happened. Other times we may hear something from someone else, so we pick it up and spend time discussing it.

Sometimes we might say something to someone else that stirs up a conversation that centers around the life of someone else, with none of the conversation being good, uplifting or encouraging.

There are so many ways we can fall into this. But no matter how it happens, it’s wrong.

Gossip is harmful. It can destroy people’s reputations and cause them great harm in so many ways. And it also causes us to walk further and further from God as we dive deeper and deeper into it.

Proverbs 16:28 (NKJV) 28 A perverse man sows strife, And a whisperer separates the best of friends.

Even Jesus warned us about it.

Matthew 12:36 (NKJV) 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.

This is serious stuff that we need to pay attention to, to make sure we’re not spending our time engaging in it.

God is holding us accountable for our actions. Gossiping and being a busybody are not exempt from accountability.

We need to go to Him and ask Him to forgive us and help us to drop this bad habit once and for all. And then we need to let Him help us not to fall into it again.

He will help us if we let Him!

Bible Verse of The Day – 7-23-16

1 Timothy 5:13 (NKJV) 13 And besides they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not.

Timothy exposes gossip for what it is… saying things we should not be saying.

According to the Webster Dictionary, a gossiper is someone who often talks about the private details of other people’s lives.

Have we ever noticed that when someone is talking about someone else, they whisper or talk quietly so they can not be heard? That is a sure sign of gossip. If we can not or won’t say it in front of the person we are talking about, then we should not be talking about it. Period.

How many times have we been drawn into a gossiping session, without us even wanting to? One thing gets asked or brought up and the next thing we know we are traveling down this road, talking and saying things we wish we hadn’t said or brought up about others. Or the other person is saying things about someone we’d rather not hear and it looks like we are part of it?

Gossiping is a problem with Christians today and we need to identify it and get God’s help. We need His help so that we may be quick to pick up on it before we get caught up in it.

Unbelievers have their eyes on Christians. They want to know how real we are, and if what we say we actually do.

Gossiping is one of those things that can catch us off guard and it is a quick turn off to unbelievers when they see or hear us participating in it. You know how it goes? It’s OK for them, but as soon as we mess up or do what they are doing, they love it. It gives them justification, so to speak.

We cannot categorize gossiping as a little thing. We need to see it for what God’s Word says it is. In God’s eyes it’s sin, and sin is what keeps God from being able to get close to us.

So let us all pray today for each other, that God will help us to see gossip for what it really is and help us to be strong and not get caught up in it. Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-28-12

(Eph 4:29 NKJV)  Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

Gossip. Sarcasm. Cynicism. Negativity. Doubt. And other things similar.

Are we falling into letting these types of things come out of our mouths on a regular basis?

God has taught us that the words out of our mouths need to be edifying and encouraging. We are to speak truth, but not in ways that carry any of the attributes above.

Jesus addressed some pretty heavy things in people’s lives, but He never did it in a way that tore the person down. Yes, He would confront sin and expose it, but He did it with love, mercy and compassion, allowing that person to see themselves. He didn’t leave the person feeling like they had just been punished by the school principal or headmaster.

It’s pretty easy to become negative, especially if our personality tends to be negative to begin with. But God wants us to let Him change what’s on the inside of us and teach us to speak words of faith and encouragement.

If we will let Him do this in us we will see some incredible changes in our life and the lives of those around us.

Bible Verse of The Day – 5-12-12

(Prov 13:3 NKJV)  He who guards his mouth preserves his life, But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction.

Here’s a good one for the weekend!

Sometimes our mouths are our worst enemies! We try to point the finger at others when we hear them talking, but most times we fail to hear ourselves when we start gossiping or speaking about things that are better left unsaid.

There’s an old saying that I really like, and sometimes I have to remind myself of this to help keep me accountable. The saying goes like this: If a person will talk to you about someone else, they will also talk to someone else about you.

We need to make sure we’re not the ones doing the talking! Oh, and we also need to make sure we’re not listening when a person starts talking about someone else.

Let’s make a conscious effort over the weekend to refrain from talking negatively about anyone else. I bet we’ll catch ourselves more often than we realize!

Bible Verse of The Day – 4-3-12

(Mat 15:18-19 NKJV)  “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. {19} “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.

In its original context, this verse goes on to explain that eating with unwashed hands does not defile a man or make him unclean.

Jesus used this example to teach us that what’s in our hearts is what defiles us, not whether we have washed our hands or not.

He also used it to teach us that what’s inside of us will eventually make its way out of our mouths.

Have you ever caught yourself saying something that was contrary to what you know God would want you to say? Maybe you used some language that you know in your heart was not pleasing to God. Or maybe you lashed out at someone in anger, and then regretted it later on.

We all make these mistakes at times. The important thing is that we learn from them.

First, we need to learn self control. But more importantly, we need to understand that this is showing us who we really are inside; what’s hiding there in the darkest recesses of our heart.

This isn’t something that we should beat ourselves up about, but something that we need to go to God with and ask Him to take those things out of our heart and replace them with His love, grace, mercy and compassion.

God is the best surgeon there is when it comes to fixing hearts!

Your Daily Bible Verse – 2-25-12

(Titus 3:9 KJV)  But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

When we find ourselves getting caught up in things that we know are not going to be fruitful, we need to turn away, change the subject or just simply let people know we’d rather not comment or participate. It takes a lot of strength and discipline to do this.

Some of the things we get caught up in are just not healthy conversation and are simply a waste of time. This is when we need God’s discernment; He will show us and help us to avoid certain conversations or people that like to draw others in by statements they make, just to get people going.
