Exodus 3:13-14 (NKJV) 13 Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
Moses was spending time watching over the flocks of his father-in-law when he was met by God, who spoke to him from a burning bush.
God told Moses that He had some things that He wanted him to do. And then He detailed what those tasks were.
Moses was pretty intimidated by what he heard, but he said he would do his best to carry these things out. And God promised that He would be with Moses every step of the way.
Before Moses left, he asked God who he should say had sent him to be the deliverer of the Israelite people. He needed a name to give them.
God simply replied with, “I AM WHO I AM”.
I’ve always loved the fact that God didn’t feel the need to explain Himself or expound on who He was. He simply was.
When Moses pressed Him for a further explanation, God said to tell them that “I AM has sent me to you”.
Then, to further ease the mind of Moses, God said “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.”
This made Moses feel a little better, since the Israelites would surely know this God.
The Hebrew word for I AM was YHWH. It didn’t have a pronunciation as a single word in the Hebrew language. We pronounce it as Yahweh, in English.
YHWH is the only “name” of God that isn’t descriptive. It was given to Moses directly by God Himself. It is considered to be too sacred to speak, according to Jewish traditions.
Regardless of the traditions or the aura surrounding it, YHWH is who God is. And it is used over 6,500 times in the Old Testament.
YHWH alludes to His omnipresence, everywhere at all times.
Most importantly, YHWH says it all; I AM.
He simply is. He need not explain Himself or justify anything that He does. He is Who He is.
