Luke 23:44-46 (NKJV) 44 Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45 Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two. 46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” Having said this, He breathed His last.
If you’ve ever had any doubts about who Jesus really was, the verses above will help solidify in your mind his true identity.
There were many unique things that happened when Jesus was crucified and took His last breath.
In the verses above we see that there was darkness over all the earth, the sun was darkened and the veil of the temple was torn in two.
These are all very major events that took place leading up to and at the very moment of His death.
These alone are enough to show that Jesus was who He said He was; the Messiah, the Son of God, God with us.
And if that’s not enough, check this out.
Matthew 27:50-54 (NKJV) 50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. 51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. 54 So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
And this…
Mark 15:37-39 (NKJV) 37 And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last. 38 Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!”
So, there was darkness over all the earth. The sun was darkened. The veil of the temple was torn in two. The earth quaked. Rocks were split into pieces. Graves were opened. Dead believers were resurrected, went into the cities and appeared to many.
What did the centurion there at the scene have to say about this when he witnessed it himself?
“Truly this was the Son of God!”
This is not a lesson in theology, but a good reminder for all of us about who Jesus is. It gives us something to ponder on, giving us hope, assurance and something to marvel at as we go through our day.
God with us. Truly this man was the Son of God.
