Zechariah 4:10 (NLT) 10 Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.”
Have you ever prayed and asked God to allow you to do bigger and greater things? Have you felt small and insignificant doing the things you do?
This is pretty typical for most people. We all wrestle with this kind of thing. We want to do bigger and better things!
But there are a few things we need to keep in mind, so let’s take a look at them.
1 – First, why do we want to do bigger and better things? Is it solely because we want to make a bigger impact? Or is there maybe a little pride or ego involved?
Sometimes we see what someone else is doing and we become envious. It’s not necessarily a problem with us wanting what they have. But maybe we think that doing something bigger and better than what we’re doing now will give us some recognition.
2 – Second, what defines bigger and better? Whose scale do we use to define bigger and better? Is it ours? Or is it maybe the worlds?
We need to be careful that we don’t get our vision skewed by the things we see. We also need to remember that what we see with our natural eyes may not be the entire picture. Things might look pretty good at first sight, but there are always unseen things behind the scenes that can take away some of the supposed glamour of any situation.
3 – Third, who will “bigger and better” benefit? Will the bigger and better thing we seek after benefit us, or will it benefit someone else. Better yet, will it benefit the kingdom of God?
Before we get caught up in “moving up”, we need to remember that bigger isn’t always better.
The verse above says that God rejoices to see the work begin and to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand! This means that He rejoices just as much in small things, things in their beginning stages, as much as those things in their later stages.
The presence of a plumb line, which is used to make sure something stands straight upright, says just that; something is being built, but is not yet finished.
Take heart! Do the task that God has placed before you. Don’t worry about being big or small. Be concerned, instead, with making sure it’s done to the best of our ability, allowing God to use us and guide us.
When we let Him lead we can never go wrong.
