Philippians 4:8 (NKJV) 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things.
When I first ran across this verse over 40 years ago, it didn’t seem like a big deal to me. It didn’t seem difficult.
After all, the world was a different place then, and focusing on “good things” wasn’t hard to do.
Times have changed, though. We are now surrounded by and inundated with news of evil happenings every day.
Even if we don’t turn on the TV to watch the news, we are still able to see what is happening all around us.
Sin is running rampant.
This can make it hard to meditate on the good things if we’re not careful.
We need to purposely push back the darkness and focus on God’s goodness if we hope to keep our minds from dwelling on what we see in the natural.
We need to allow God to help us see what’s happening, but keep our eyes fixed on Him.
This can be a monumental task at first, especially for some people who might tend to lean toward the negative side of things.
But God is faithful, and He is able to transform us, renewing our minds and teaching us how to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, even in our thoughts.
Romans 12:2 (NKJV) 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
And it’s through this transformation that we will learn to take our thoughts captive, bringing those thoughts into captivity (surrender), teaching our minds to obey the leading of the Holy Spirit, and not falling prey to the enemy as he attacks our minds.
2 Corinthians 10:4-6 (NKJV) 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.
Find the things of God. Meditate on those things.
