1 Peter 1:1 (NKJV) 1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia…
As Peter began his first epistle, he greeted a variety of believers in different geographical regions who had been “dispersed”.
While some believers of that time were scattered due to persecution, that was not the case for these.
It’s interesting, though, that Peter chose to use the word, “pilgrims”, when addressing all of them.
This is significant because it indicates and confirms the temporary nature of our presence here on earth.
Pilgrims can also be defined as strangers, sojourners or temporary residents of a land.
So it is with us, as followers of Christ. We are not here permanently, but temporarily, to live for a season and then move on to eternity.
Our home is not here. It is a heavenly home, in the presence of our Creator and the One who redeemed us.
It’s very easy for us to sometimes forget this and begin to put down roots that are deeper than necessary here, becoming entangled in the affairs of this world.
This can cause separation between us and God without us even realizing it because it’s not necessarily intentional on our part. It just kind of happens a little at a time.
The word says in James 4:4 that friendship with the world is enmity (hostility, animosity) toward God.
And sometimes it creeps in so subtly that we don’t see it until it’s been there for a long time.
This is why it’s so important that we stay sharp, constantly discerning everything; even those things that seem harmless, innocent and insignificant, because a little bit of yeast leavens the whole lump (Galatians 5:9).
Let us be reminded that we are merely pilgrims here, passing through on our way to our eternal home, and that the things of this world are not ours to hold.
