Bible Verse of The Day – 11-28-22

Matthew 27:46 (NKJV) 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?

It’s hard to comprehend that Jesus would have to utter the words, “My God, why have You forsaken Me?”. But He did.

Why?

Because the sins that He had taken upon Himself, the sins of the world, your sins and my sins, made it impossible for God the Father to look upon Him.

In this moment, Jesus was able to completely identify with and relate to sinners, and the separation from God that they experience.

Despite the fact that He had walked the earth in human form for over 30 years, had felt temptation, sorrow, hunger, compassion, rejection by man, and many other human emotions and experiences, He had never felt rejected by God. This was something new to Him.

But it happened. And it shook Him to the core as He hung on the cross, about to die for the sins of the world.

Some may ask why. Why did Jesus have to go through this moment of rejection after all that he had done? Why did He have to feel this terrible emotional distress after being brutally beaten and nailed to a cross?

It’s because God is holy. He cannot look upon sin. Sin repels God. And God rejects sin. It is impossible for God to be in the presence of sin.

Since Jesus was required to take our sin upon Himself in order to offer us redemption, it was necessary for God to turn away. The unfathomable darkness of this sin was more than our minds can comprehend.

It’s hard for our minds to wrap around Jesus being rejected by the Father. But it helps us to better understand the incredible depth of the evil that Jesus had to defeat. And it helps us be more grateful for our salvation, knowing that this is what he had to bear for us.

Thank you, Jesus, for your sacrifice. Thank you for bearing my sins and removing the veil between God and me. Thank you for shedding your blood, so that I might be forgiven and redeemed. And thank you, Father, for your mercy. Thank you for sending Jesus to offer redemption to humanity, so we might be able to stand in your presence and spend eternity with you.

Amen
