Genesis 3:8 (NKJV) 8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
As I was studying, and I read this verse recently, it got me to thinking about humanity, and how we all tend to react the same way to certain things.
I can relate to what Adam and Eve did. Let me share a little story with you.
When I was 5 or 6 years old, I remember giving myself a haircut while I was at school. As I sat at my desk and snipped away at my hair with my scissors, I thought about how surprised my mom and dad would be when they saw it. I was, after all, doing them a huge favor so they wouldn’t have to bring me to the barber to get it cut.
Well, to make a long story short, after I cut my hair, I began to realize that maybe it wasn’t such a good idea. So, when I got home, I got off the bus and went and hid under the dining room table.
Part of me was still excited to show my mom my new look. But another part of me was a bit afraid.
Well, the afraid part of me turned out to be right. My mom wasn’t pleased at all. And I was disappointed, both in her response and in myself for being foolish.
Do we do the same thing with God when we make poor choices as adults? Do we hide from Him, like I hid from my mom, and like Adam and Eve hid from God?
It’s important to know that when we make a mess of things, we don’t have to hide. In fact, hiding is the worst thing we can do. The best thing we can do is to confess it and take care of it right away, as soon as we possibly can.
God is merciful. He wants us to come to Him and confess.
And if we really think about it, He knows already anyway. So, hiding from Him and trying to run away from what we’ve done only makes things worse.
Let’s not be like me when I was a kid, hiding from my mom under the table. And let’s not be like Adam and Eve, hiding from God in the garden.
Go to Him. Confess. Repent. Learn from it. And move on.
