Bible Verse of The Day – 12-5-13

Proverbs 16:18 (NKJV) Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

Pride can take on so many forms. It’s not always as obvious as the stereotypes that most of us think of. You know… the arrogant, cocky individual that nobody likes to be around because they think they’re better than everyone else.

If it was always that easy to spot in ourselves, we’d be much more likely to stop it in its tracks and do something about it.

But pride can be so subtle that we might not see it until we actually fall and start looking into why we fell.

Only then will we be open to God showing us where we were prideful. Only then will we listen to the Holy Spirit when He shows us our mistakes and our faults.

But here’s the good news. We don’t have to wait until we take a tumble to check ourselves and ask God to show us who we really are. We can ask Him today, right now, where and how we are prideful, arrogant, cocky or haughty.

And sometimes He will show us when we’re not even asking Him to. The key is that we have to listen to Him. Let me share a little story about how God spoke to me about pride a few years ago. I’ll try to keep it short!

We had been visiting with some friends and they invited us out to lunch. We accepted the invitation and enjoyed lunch and fellowship with them and several other people at a large table.

When everyone was almost done eating, I got up from the table, found the waitress and told her that we (Pastor Ellie and I) wanted to pay for everyone’s meal. I went ahead and paid the tab and walked back to the table.

A short time later, the waitress came by the table and the person who invited us to go with them asked her for the check. She then told him that it was all paid for and then pointed to me. Of course they were surprised and thankful that we had done this, but they had expected to pay for us.

A short time later, we all left and went our own way. As we drove home I very clearly heard a word pop up in my spirit. I didn’t know what the word meant, but I knew that it was God speaking to me and that He was trying to teach me something.

When we got home, I looked the word up and what I suspected was confirmed. The word referred to a specific type of pride or arrogance. God was showing me that we were being prideful by paying for everyone’s lunch. He also showed me that what we did was hurtful to the person who had invited us out.

To this day, I don’t remember what that one word was that God spoke to me. I know it was God, beyond any doubt.

So, you see, pride can take on many different forms, even disguised as generosity. So always listen when God speaks to you, because you never know when He will speak or how He will speak.

But He does speak to us!

Bible Verse of The Day – 12-4-13

(Galatians 5:24-25 NKJV)  And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. {25} If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Let’s take a look at what God’s word tells us to do with the flesh; He says to crucify it, meaning put to death or destroy the power of it.

God tells us what the flesh is all about here: (Galatians 5:19-21 NKJV) Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, {20} idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, {21} envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like.

This is what we operate in if we don’t take charge of the flesh. Do we ever wonder why we keep making the same mistakes over and over? Do we wonder why we say and do the same things that got us into trouble last time, after we told ourselves we would never do it or act that way again?

We apologize; we say we are sorry, but not long after that we are in the same boat, doing it again. It’s one thing to make mistakes; we all do. No one’s perfect, but we are talking about making the SAME mistakes repeatedly.

In order to stop this, we have to take steps towards crucifying our flesh. Like anything we have to change, it maybe uncomfortable at first. But if we are sincere in wanting to do what is right, we will adjust.

What may seem to be uncomfortable or even painful at first, will soon become pleasant as we see the fruit of it. And we may find ourselves thinking, wow, why didn’t I do this earlier in life?

God can and will give us the strength to go through it. We just have to be the ones to make the decision and take the first step and say “yes this is what I want”!

Crucify the flesh and walk in the Spirit today.

Bible Verse of The Day – 12-3-13

(John 15:14 NKJV)  “You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.

As we follow Christ and His commandments He will be our true friend; we will never find a friend as good and pure as Jesus.

He is ONE of a kind! He will be honest and truthful with us, He will never talk behind our back. He will love us through our ups and downs.

And He will never give up on us! Amen.

What a friend we have in Jesus!

Bible Verse of The Day – 12-2-13

Romans 8:38-39 (NKJV) 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Times are tough everywhere. No matter what part of the world you live in, things are like they have never been before. The things that God’s word has been prophesying for centuries are coming to pass right before our eyes!

But no matter what comes our way, whether economic trials, spiritual battles, social problems or anything else that gets thrown at us, there is one thing we can be sure of. And that is this; nothing can separate us from the love of God. Nothing!

His word tells us that if we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us.

James 4:8 (NKJV) Draw near to God and He will draw near to you…

So, you see, the only thing that can pull us away from Him is ourselves. There is no outside force that can tear us away from Him unless we allow it to happen.

So resist the devil and he will flee from you. Press into God and He will wrap you in His arms.

And never, ever give up hope or lose faith in God.
